Selizharovo brings together architectural history and insights into the area’s past economic life. The Church of the Resurrection, the surviving church of a former monastery complex, the local history museum and the Avenue of Glory reveal different aspects of the town’s history. If you would like historical themes to shape your stay, you might consider Selizharovo when looking for a holiday apartment.

Churches and Local History

The Church of the Resurrection was built in 1763 on the low left bank of the Volga, on the site of an earlier wooden church. Only its original core remains, a building of the “octagon-on-square” type. The term describes its basic form: an octagon above a square. The bell tower and refectory replaced older parts of the building in the second half of the 19th century; both were destroyed during the Second World War. Its architectural history therefore includes both the surviving original core and later additions that no longer exist.

Of the former Holy Trinity Monastery complex in Selizharovo, only the Church of Saints Peter and Paul has survived. The local history museum is in the town centre, in a former 19th-century merchant’s house. One exhibition explores the livelihoods of people in the area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Among other things, it covers how log driving was organised and the tools and equipment used for it. Alongside architectural history, this offers a glimpse into the area’s working history and the equipment used.

Bas-reliefs of seven Heroes of the Soviet Union commemorate them along the central Avenue of Glory. This memorial takes a different focus from the churches and the exhibition on the area’s former livelihoods.

Nature and Trails in Tver Oblast

One nature highlight in Tver Oblast is the Central Forest State Nature Biosphere Reserve. The “Staroselskiy Mokh Bog” ecological trail passes through a picturesque raised bog with wide open expanses completely covered in moss and unusual plants. The reserve also offers guided tours on the “Tayny Okovskogo lesa” and “Lesnaya azbuka” ecological trails. An excursion to the “Staroselskiy Mokh” raised bog is also available; visitors use their own vehicle for this excursion.

You can hike to the “Barsuchikha” ranger station as a day trip or stay overnight in a forest cabin. Along the way, you will see southern taiga forest and a raised bog. This hike offers two options for how long to spend, while both take in the landscapes described.

At the reserve’s central estate, the Nature Museum showcases the protected area’s main ecosystems and the species that live there; one room is devoted to scientific research. The grounds also include a visitor centre with information on the organisation’s history and structure, a regular exhibition of children’s work and a souvenir shop. The nature trails, hike and museum each have a different focus: they lead through bog landscapes, showcase taiga forest or offer insights into the protected area’s ecosystems and research.
