Protivye combines a stay on the Rybinsk Reservoir with a history of sacred architecture in the surrounding area. Two churches once stood opposite the village, forming an ensemble with a monastery. Historians date the monastery’s foundation to no later than the 14th century. If you are interested in architectural and regional history as well as the lakeside setting, Protivye offers a specific focus to guide your choice of destination.

Churches and monastery in the historical surroundings

A historical account published in 2014 describes two churches that stood opposite the village of Protiv’ye, on the border of the Darwin Nature Reserve, until the 1930s. One was dedicated to the Holy Spirit, the other to the Dormition of the Mother of God. They also differed in construction: one was made of stone, the other of wood. Both were considered valuable historical monuments by the state.

The churches formed an ensemble with the Uspenskaya Bogoroditskaya Lamskaya pustyn Monastery. According to historians, it was founded no later than the 14th century and was one of the oldest monasteries in the region. The history of the nearby area thus ranges from specific church dedications and different building materials to a monastic tradition whose beginnings date back to the Middle Ages.

Another historical trace is the Church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God, built in 1845. It was located in the Rybinsk Reservoir area, about 1.7 km northeast of Protiv’ye, and was built in the Late Classicist style. It had a chapel dedicated to Saints Zosima and Sabbatius of Solovki. The church is no longer standing. For those interested in architecture, this offers a comparison between the Late Classicist building and the two churches mentioned in the account as standing there in the 1930s.

Holiday homes by the reservoir and regional day trips

In Protiv’ye, the «Rybnoe mesto» holiday complex offers guests comfortable holiday homes on the Rybinsk Reservoir, in the second line from the shore. This is a specific accommodation option in the village. Check the offer and booking details directly with the provider in advance.

In the wider travel destination of Tver Oblast, the Central Forest Reserve offers a distinct natural attraction. Guided tours are available on the “Tajny Okovskogo lesa” and “Lesnaya azbuka” ecological trails. The “Boloto Staroselskiy mokh” educational trail leads through a raised bog with broad open areas completely covered in moss and unusual plants. Visitors use their own vehicle for the excursion to the “Staroselskiy mokh” raised bog.

Another option for planning a tour is the hike to the “Barsuchikha” cordon: it can be taken as a day trip or with an overnight stay in a forest cabin. Along the way, you will see southern taiga forest and a raised bog. The choice between a day hike and an overnight stay helps you gauge the time you would like to set aside for this tour.

The reserve’s central estate is home to a visitor centre with information about the organisation’s history and structure, a regular exhibition of children’s work, and a souvenir shop. The nature museum presents the protected area’s main ecosystems and the species that live there; a separate hall is devoted to scientific research. The exhibition of children’s work is a specific family-friendly feature.

Those interested in culture will also find other historical themes in Tver Oblast: in Torzhok, the Verkhnee gorodishche is an archaeological monument of federal significance and a tourist attraction in the historic centre. The Novotorzhskiy Borisoglebskiy monastyr was founded in 1038 and is one of Russia’s oldest Orthodox monasteries. The “Blin s Pripyokom” and “Kuzminki v Torzhke” festivals are held annually in the Novotorzhskiy kreml. This means you can pair your choice of Protivye for your stay with an interest in nature or further regional history.
