Tatanovo lies on the right bank of the Tsna and at the edge of the forest. Floodplain meadows in the Tsna floodplain and woodland beyond the river shape the local natural landscape. In the centre, a memorial adds a place of remembrance to the landscape.

River Landscape and Local Character

Near Tatanovo, the meadows lie in the Tsna floodplain, while the woodland is on the other side of the river. The river, open floodplain areas and forest edge are therefore distinct features of the place. The Tsna is considered the region’s largest river. If you choose a place to stay based on its landscape, you can therefore think of Tatanovo as a riverside and forest-edge destination.

This description of the area offers practical guidance when choosing a holiday apartment: Are you mainly interested in the natural landscape along the Tsna, or is a memorial in the centre a stronger focus? These two themes offer different points of interest, without requiring you to assume there is a general sightseeing programme.

A Memorial and a Dated Church Service

The memorial in the centre commemorates people who died defending their people. It was erected in 1987. Its dedication provides a clear point of reference for Tatanovo’s history and culture of remembrance, without naming a specific war.

A specific religious occasion took place in Tatanovo’s chapel on 21 September 2026: a festive service was held there for the Feast of the Nativity of the Mother of God. This is a dated event alongside the ever-present memorial. If you want to plan a trip around a particular feast, check the event dates.

Nature in Tambov Oblast

Beyond Tatanovo, Tambov Oblast offers its own natural setting. Founded in 1994, the Voroninsky Nature Reserve protects preserved forest-steppe ecosystems in Central Russia. It comprises two larger areas along the Vorona and ten smaller areas in the valleys of its tributaries. More than 150 oxbow lakes lie within the reserve, where around 900 plant species grow.

Information about protected species also shows different areas of focus: 31 bird species from the nature reserve are listed in Russia’s Red Book, and 42 plant species in the region’s Red Book. The walking excursion “Zapovednye Tropinki” is described as a specific timeframe for a hike; its stated duration is 1.5 hours. This means Tambov Oblast offers both the expansive character of a protected area and a tour with a clearly specified duration as different nature experiences.

Museums and Culture in Tambov Oblast

S. V. Rachmaninoff’s “Ivanovka” Museum Reserve comprises a manor house, an outbuilding, a park, a garden, flower beds, ponds and park structures. Every year in late August, People’s Artist of the Russian Federation Nikolai Lugansky gives a traditional concert at the museum reserve. If this event is important for your plans, check the dates for the relevant year.

The G. V. Chicherin House Museum brings together architecture and the history of its collection. It is housed in a former manor house: a single-storey wooden building with a mezzanine, in the Russian Classicism style of the first half of the 19th century. The collection comprises around 4,500 objects, including commemorative furniture and books from Chicherin’s study at the People’s Commissariat for Foreign Affairs, as well as personal belongings of the Chicherin family.

For planning your holiday, you can distinguish between two scales: Tatanovo’s own character is shaped by the Tsna, its floodplain, the forest edge and the memorial; the other nature and culture experiences belong to the wider destination of Tambov Oblast. First consider which focus best describes your stay, and use that to guide your search for a holiday apartment.
