Rezh: City History and Geological Trails in the Surrounding Area
Accommodation in Rezh
Rezh combines a rich city history with excursions to geological trails in the surrounding area. At the Rezh Historical Museum, you can encounter history through the building itself: it was built in 1847 as a parish school at the Church of the Epiphany. Its former use as a school and its current function as a museum give the building two historical layers. For travellers who would like to explore historic places in the city as well as visit a museum, Rezh offers several distinct points of interest.
Museum and Exhibitions in Rezh
The Rezh Historical Museum also houses original collages depicting Rezh’s sights, which visitors can view there. Check the current visiting arrangements before your visit. Another cultural venue is the “Samotsvetnaya polosa Urala” mineral exhibition at 4 Sovetskaya Street in Rezh. Before travelling, ask the reserve administration about visiting arrangements. The two venues cater to different interests: the collages relate to the city’s sights, while the exhibition focuses on minerals.
Church, Monument and Industrial History
Religious history, the image of a Ural master craftsman and traces of iron production offer several historical perspectives on Rezh. The Nagorny Church is the only Orthodox church in Rezh to have survived from the pre-revolutionary period. A monument in the city depicts a generalized image of a Ural master craftsman and is considered unique to Rezh. The industrial heritage includes masonry from the first dam of the Rezh iron and pig iron works.
Walking in Rezh and on Trails in the Surrounding Area
The 2026 city guide describes a walking route through Rezh that can be completed without any special preparation. This is one option for exploring the city, distinct from excursions farther afield, where you can choose from three trails based on their length.
In the surrounding area of Rezh, Lipovsky Geological Park has three trails: the “Plyazh” trail (1,400 m), the “Tsvetnye gliny” trail (1,900 m) and the “Smotrovaya ploshchadka” trail (4,860 m). The “Tsvetnye gliny” trail is 500 m longer than the shortest one; the “Smotrovaya ploshchadka” trail is more than three times as long as the “Plyazh” trail. Check availability and trail conditions with the reserve administration in advance.
A six-hour hike from Oktyabrskoye to the “Shaitan-kamen” rock is also offered in the surrounding area. It is 8 km long and intended for people with a moderate level of physical fitness. At 8 km, the hike is longer than any of the three individual park trails; its six-hour duration also provides a separate timeframe for planning. Before travelling, ask the reserve administration about current availability and arrangements.
When looking for a holiday rental, you can choose to focus on cultural sites in Rezh or excursions in the surrounding area. This lets you choose your destination according to the experiences you want to make time for.
