Kamensk-Uralsky: Rock Arch, Cast Iron and City Parks
Accommodation in Kamensk-Uralsky
Kamensk-Uralsky combines geological features and green city parks with a history shaped by an ironworks, a cast-iron foundry and a bell foundry. Between collections, a bridge and woodland paths, there are different ways to spend your time: explore the city’s history, enjoy outdoor activities, or combine the two.
Rock arch, woodland paths and a destination in the surrounding area
Kamennye Vorota is a 20-metre-high limestone cliff with a natural arch running through it. It is designated a natural monument of regional significance. Its rock formations offer a different focus from the wooded city parks: here, limestone and the arch define the natural landscape, while the parks are about paths and outdoor activity.
Razgulyaevsky Park is in the city centre. Visitors can walk through its coniferous forest; there are also pull-up bars for exercise and cycling routes of varying difficulty. Kosmos City Park is also in a forest in the centre. You can walk and cycle there, and feeding squirrels is also mentioned as a possible activity. Bear in mind that rules on feeding animals may vary.
Another geological highlight in the nearby area is the Revun rapids. This natural monument is by the village of Beklenishchevo, 22 kilometres from Kamensk. This means that alongside city parks and urban attractions, visitors can also explore natural sites outside the city.
From the ironworks to geological collections
The exhibition “Kamensk-Uralsky: City and Works in Three Dimensions (1682–1917)” covers the founding of Kamenskaya Sloboda and a small monastic ironworks. Its development led to Kamensk’s first metallurgical and military cast-iron foundry; the exhibition also covers the foundry’s two centuries of operation. If you plan to visit, check the current visitor arrangements in advance.
The V. P. Shevalyov Geological Museum consists of two halls with around 4,000 exhibits in five sections: rocks, minerals, mineral resources, palaeontology and the geology of the Kamensk district. The topics range from individual materials and finds to the geology of the district. The oldest item in the palaeontological collection is considered to be a slab bearing stromatolite impressions; it is said to be 1.5 billion years old.
Individual buildings and collections also offer insight into the town’s history. The stone bridge over the Kamenka was built in 1903 and is considered an example of engineering with high artistic value. The artillery collection at the I. Ya. Styazhkin Local History Museum includes items from the Kamensk works dating from 1733 onwards. These details highlight different aspects: one focuses on a structure, the other on objects from the history of the works.
At the Kamensk Bell Foundry, visitors can learn about the casting process from beginning to end and ring a bell at the end. If you plan to include this experience, confirm its availability before travelling.
