Kachkanar brings together local city history and firsthand insights into mining: the local history museum focuses on the development of the municipal district, while a tour described in 2024 leads to a viewing platform overlooking the main open-pit mine. There is also a marked route across Mount Kachkanar and a promenade along the reservoir. Culture, technology, outdoor activity and a break by the water offer different ways to spend your time here.

City History at the Local History Museum

The local history museum in Kachkanar opened on October 8, 1992, and was a branch of the State Museum-Reserve for the Mining History of the Middle Urals in Nizhny Tagil. Its collections include 2,297 items. Eleven permanent exhibitions cover the Indigenous peoples of the Urals, the development of the Kachkanar municipal district, and its social and industrial infrastructure. Other topics include veterans of the Great Patriotic War and participants in military operations and local conflicts in the second half of the 20th century. The museum thus connects the city’s development and industrial history with the region’s cultural and commemorative history.

Memorials and Art in Public Spaces

A monument in Stroitel Park commemorates Kachkanar’s first builders. They made their way through the taiga, built the first houses in what would become the city, and began constructing the mining and processing plant. The monument links the city’s early history to specific milestones, from building houses to starting work on the plant.

The “Chinese Wall” offers a different perspective: this is the name of a 226-meter-long section on Sverdlov Street, painted by Perm-born street artist Vismut Tlyashev. The monument and the painted streetscape offer different ways to explore Kachkanar’s history and art in public spaces.

Mining as a Tour Theme

The “Put Rudy” (“Path of the Ore”) tour by EVRAZ KGOK, described in 2024, includes a visit to the information and exhibition center (museum) and a viewing platform overlooking the 400-meter-deep main open-pit mine. At the production site, visitors can see mining equipment and minerals extracted from the open pit, and have their picture taken next to a 15-cubic-meter excavator and a 240-ton BelAZ truck. A visit to the plant complex includes seeing modern thickeners and finished products from the pelletizing plant. The program therefore spans the information center, equipment and minerals, and processed products. Check the current booking and visitor requirements before your trip.

Mountain Route and Lakeside Promenade

The marked “Gora Kachkanar” hiking route crosses the mountain’s northern and southern peaks and ends in the city of Kachkanar. Check the current access rules before setting out. The viewpoints on nearby Mount Kachkanar are in a regulated area. Published visitor rules list opening hours on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; check this information again when planning your hike.

The promenade along the Nizhne-Kachkanarskoye Reservoir is a popular recreation spot for Kachkanar residents. The first completed phase of improvements was reported in January 2026. At that time, the promenade had paved, illuminated paths and children’s play areas made from environmentally friendly materials.

Each experience offers a different focus: the museum and monument introduce the city’s history and commemorative heritage, the tour highlights the open-pit mine and processing, the route is for hiking, and the promenade offers a break by the water. If you’re looking for a holiday apartment in Kachkanar, first consider what you’d like your days to focus on. Check the tour’s current booking requirements and the access rules for the mountain route.
