Desnogorsk brings together a wooden tent-roofed church, a city beach and a sailing regatta held on a specific date as distinct points of interest. You can explore the town from the perspectives of architecture, water and events; for swimming plans, the seasonal status matters, while the regatta was tied to a specific day.

Church, sailing and beach in Desnogorsk

The Church of St Stephen of Perm is a wooden tent-roofed church built from Karelian pine. Its design and materials give it a distinctive architectural character. If you are interested in timber construction and religious architecture, the church offers a specific point of interest alongside the town’s water-related attractions.

A sailing regatta was held in Desnogorsk on 12 June 2026 to mark Russia Day. It was organised by the “Federatsiya parusnogo sporta Smolenskoy oblasti”, the “Smolenskoye morskoye sobraniye” and the administration of the city of Desnogorsk in Smolensk Oblast. The event was therefore tied to a clearly specified date.

In 2024, the city beach in Microdistrict 1 was described as the only approved swimming and recreation area for residents and visitors to the city. It had a volleyball court, gazebos and sun canopies. This information relates to the 2024 season; check the current seasonal status before visiting.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Desnogorsk, you can match your preferred focus to your travel dates: the church represents architecture, the regatta a specific event date, and the beach swimming plans subject to seasonal conditions.

A cultural and historical trail in the wider destination of Smolensk Oblast leads to the Gnezdovo archaeological complex. Around 2,500 burial mounds and a settlement have been preserved there. The complex is the largest archaeological site complex in Russia and Europe dating from the period when the Old Russian state was emerging. As an archaeological monument of state (federal) significance, it is under state protection.

Another cultural and historical point of interest is the A. S. Griboyedov State Historical, Cultural and Natural Museum-Reserve “Khmelita” in Vyazemsky District, Smolensk Oblast. The Khmelita estate has been owned by the Griboyedov family since 1680 and is the centre of the museum-reserve. The reserve is located 260 km from Moscow, 200 km from Smolensk and 37 km from Vyazma.

The landscape of Smolensk Oblast is also shaped by Smolenskoye Poozerye National Park. Established on 15 April 1992 in Demidovsky and Dukhovshchinsky Districts, it protects unique natural environments for recreation, education, science and culture. A viewpoint on the high southern shore of Lake Sapsho offers a picturesque view of the lake and several islands.

The “K Istokam” eco-trail is a circular route that starts in the village of Stary Dvor. A track for mobile apps such as Geotreker or MAPS.ME helps visitors explore it independently. Two viewpoints were also set up along the trail at Lakes Svyatets and Sapsho in 2023–2024. For a different nature experience, the barefoot trail in Boroviki has 14 sections, each six metres long, with different natural surfaces. Visitors walk them barefoot; at the end, you can wash your feet and, if you wish, stroll through the Aptekarskiy Sad.

The “Poozerye bez baryerov” eco-trail, created in 2017, is intended for people with health limitations. It starts near the “Baklanovo” Eco-Centre building. The trail descriptions highlight different features: “K Istokam” is a circular route with an app track for independent navigation, while “Poozerye bez baryerov” is specifically intended for a particular group of visitors.

Guided cultural and nature experiences

At the “Stargrad” ethnographic village, guided tours introduce visitors to the way of life of the ancient Slavs and showcase everyday objects, weapons and clothing. Visits are only possible as part of a guided group. The extended tour programme includes the “Babiy kut” workshop on traditional women’s crafts, where participants can make their own souvenirs, and the “Polevaya kuznia”, where they can mint coins and make chainmail. At the “Srednevekovy tir”, visitors can shoot a bow and sling, and throw axes and javelins. The programme also includes a water activity in the Viking oak boat “Fornkor”: participants can sail and row on one of the national park’s deepest lakes. Arrange extended programme activities in advance.

Group and individual guided tours are also available at the “Katyn” Memorial, around the grounds, through the expositions and to the exhibitions. They can be requested in advance or on the day of your visit, subject to availability. Check current opening hours and booking details before your visit.
