Sergiyevsky District offers topics in geology, hydrology and local history. They include Blue Lake near Staroye Yakushkino, Sulphur Lake on the grounds of the former Sergiyevskiye Mineralnye Vody sanatorium, and the Sernovodsky Shikhan. The history of the health resort and traces of the Sergiyevsk fortress are also among the region’s special discoveries.

Karst Lake and Sulphur Lake

Blue Lake near the village of Staroye Yakushkino is a circular karst lake fed by a hydrogen sulphide spring. Its water surface covers about 300 square metres. The clear water appears intensely blue due to the refraction of light; its rounded shape and high banks define its appearance. The lake is listed as a natural monument of regional significance.

A powerful hydrogen sulphide spring emerges at the bottom of Blue Lake. The district’s account attributes the water’s unusual clarity to the fact that there is no life in the lake as a result.

Sulphur Lake stands out for its size: its water surface covers about one hectare, and it is no more than three metres deep. Springs feed the lake and supply six million litres of water each day. The lake’s water and mud are protected as a rare natural monument of global significance because of their distinctive hydrochemical properties and microflora. According to the district’s account, the lake is also home to at least one endemic species of blue-green algae that is found nowhere else in the world.

Relict Mountain and Natural Monument

The Sernovodsky Shikhan is a 300-hectare geological relict mountain at the confluence of the Shungut and Surgut rivers. It rises to 200–250 metres above sea level. Its size and elevation give the district’s landscape a different scale from the lakes’ small water surfaces.

Another natural monument is the Sernovodsk Cave, one kilometre from the settlement of Sernovodsk. It is listed as a natural monument and has scientific and educational significance. The cave adds an underground natural feature to the geology of the lakes and the Shikhan.

The History of the Health Resort and Cultural Discoveries

The Sergiyevskiye Mineralnye Vody health resort officially opened in 1833. In 1919, it was declared a health resort of national significance.

The district also has links to the history of the fortress. Fragments of the earth rampart of the Sergiyevsk fortress remain on Kazachy Hill. An important section of the Novo-Zakamsk defensive line was the Sergiyevsk Distance; it ran through the present-day territory of Sergiyevsky District. Thus, alongside the history of the health resort, military history provides a distinct area of interest.

The Sergiyevsk Museum of Local History is located in the Smirnov merchant house. The building, dating from the second half of the 19th century, is a cultural heritage site in Sergiyevsky District. In the village of Staroye Yakushkino, the Ekodolye Museum is the third stop on the excursion route. A guided tour covers the village’s history as well as the everyday life, customs, traditions and culture of the Chuvash people. Check in advance whether the tour is currently running.
