Podstepki invites you to explore local history and church architecture together. St. Nicholas Church combines a cruciform layout with details ranging from the bell tower to the lower church space. At the same time, the history of the village reaches further back than its present-day ecclesiastical development. The wider destination of Samara Oblast also offers its own landscapes and natural highlights.

St. Nicholas Church: Layout and Details

St. Nicholas Church has a cruciform layout and a tent-shaped roof. Its architecture includes three golden domes. The western section contains the bell tower, which has eight bells. The heaviest weighs 1,500 kilograms—a striking feature of the church’s fittings that differs from its exterior form.

The basement also serves a distinct religious purpose: it houses a baptistery dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The lower church space opened in 2018. Divine Liturgy is celebrated at St. Nicholas Church on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays at 9:00 a.m. If you plan to attend a service, check the date before setting out.

Old Podstepki and the Present-Day Village

Distinguishing between old Podstepki and the present-day village is important to understanding local history. In old Podstepki, a wooden church dedicated to the Archangel Michael was built in 1872. In the mid-20th century, the village and church were flooded when the Kuibyshev Reservoir was created. St. Nicholas Church in Podstepki was consecrated on September 25, 2025. A new parish had already been established in the present-day village in 2001. These dates mark different chapters in the local history of the church.

Nature and Trails in Samara Oblast

Within the wider destination of Samara Oblast, Samarskaya Luka is a landscape destination in its own right. It is formed by a bend in the Volga and the Usinsky Bay of the Kuibyshev Reservoir. Samarskaya Luka comprises two protected areas: Samarskaya Luka National Park, covering 127,000 hectares, and the Zhiguli Nature Reserve, covering 23,000 hectares.

Molodetsky Kurgan lies in the northwestern part of Samarskaya Luka. A scenic, 75-kilometer-long ridge in the Zhiguli Mountains begins there. From the kurgan, views extend over the artificial Zhiguli Sea, the opposite bank of the Volga, Tolyatti and the village of Zhiguli. More than 200 rare and endangered plant species grow at the kurgan. Facilities include two nature trails, rest areas, a car park and a picnic lawn.

The trails of Samarskaya Luka vary considerably in length and subject. The seven-day “Zhigulyovsky Labyrinth” horse-riding route is about 140 kilometers long and passes through most of the national park. It can also be completed on foot or by bicycle; the stated season runs from May to September. Hiking trips and bus-and-hiking tours are also organized in the national park. As visits to the park may be subject to restrictions, check the latest park information before planning your trip.

Shorter themed trails offer different experiences, too: the “LukAmorje” nature trail is less than one kilometer long and introduces visitors to the plants of Samarskaya Luka. The 1.3-kilometer “Vedmino Ozero” nature trail begins at the entrance to Bakhilovo. Along the way, visitors learn about the founding of the village; at the lake, old stories and Mordvin legends are shared. The range of options in Samara Oblast thus extends from botany and local traditions to longer routes through the national park.

When looking for a holiday apartment, let your main interest guide your choice: would you like to focus on Podstepki’s local and church history, or are you planning your trip mainly around the nature trails and landscapes of Samara Oblast?
