Abashevo tells its story through specific milestones: its founding under an earlier name, a stone church with two altars, and a watermill dating from around the turn of the century. The village is also historically linked to a bend in the Chagra River. Together, these themes give travellers insight into the village’s history without narrowing the focus to individual sights.

From Penzino to Abashevo

In 1776, settlers from the Penza Governorate founded Abashevo; the place was originally called “Penzino.” The settlers made their home at a scenic bend in the Chagra River. The year of its founding, the settlers’ origins, and its former name together provide a clear starting point for understanding the village’s development.

The stone church and its grounds

In 1867, a stone church was built in Abashevo to replace a dilapidated wooden church. The historic church grounds included a stone wall, as well as rooms for a school, a library, and a caretaker’s apartment. The account therefore covers not only the church building but also the facilities that formed part of the grounds.

The church had two altars. The heated lower level was dedicated to Saint Prince Alexander Nevsky and was consecrated on 22 October 1875. The upper level was dedicated to Saint Sophia the Great Martyr and her daughters Vera, Nadezhda, and Lyubov. The year it was built, its two levels, and their different dedications offer several specific points of connection to the church’s history.

The watermill belonging to the nobleman Pustoshkin is also associated with Abashevo. It dates from the late 19th or early 20th century. Together with the history of the church, it offers another perspective on the village’s historic buildings.

Nature and culture in Samara Oblast

As a broader travel destination, Samara Oblast provides a distinct regional setting. Samarskaya Luka is a landscape formed by a bend in the Volga and the Usinsky Bay of the Kuybyshev Reservoir. It includes the Samarskaya Luka National Park and the Zhiguli Nature Reserve.

Molodetsky Kurgan lies in the northwest of Samarskaya Luka; a scenic, 75-kilometre-long ridge of the Zhiguli Mountains begins there. From the kurgan, views stretch across the man-made Zhiguli Sea, the opposite bank of the Volga, Tolyatti, and the village of Zhiguli. The kurgan also has two nature trails, rest areas, a car park, and a picnic meadow. More than 200 rare and endangered plant species grow there. Visitor restrictions apply in the national park; check local park guidance before making plans.

Regional trails vary in length and theme. The “LukAmorje” nature trail is less than a kilometre long and introduces visitors to the plants of Samarskaya Luka. The 1.3-kilometre “Vedmino Ozero” nature trail starts at the entrance to Bakhilovo: along the way, visitors learn about the village’s origins, and at the lake they hear old Mordvin tales and legends. The 14-kilometre “Gora Strelnaja” driving and hiking route passes through relic natural communities such as rocky steppes and mountain pine forests. Its walking section includes a guided tour covering the history of the nature reserve, its natural environment, and the formation of the Zhiguli Mountains; check seasonal operating information with the operator in advance.

Those interested in a longer tour can also find the “Zhiguli Labyrinth” in Samara Oblast: this approximately 140-kilometre horse-riding route takes seven days and passes through most of the national park. It can also be travelled on foot or by bicycle; the season is listed as May to September. As a cultural counterpoint, the “Domik Repina” museum complex in the village of Shiryaevo presents the way of life of 19th-century peasants and merchants. Nature trails, a multi-day route, and a museum therefore appeal to different regional interests.

This way, your choice of holiday apartment can reflect what interests you most about the trip.
