Chizhovo brings together early local history and a glimpse into historical everyday life. Local records range from a mention in the 17th century to a mini-museum established in the library in 2008. In the wider destination of Ryazan Oblast, there are also distinct themes of nature, museums and crafts.

Chizhovo: History and Everyday Life

A tax register from 1676 mentions Chizhovo as a village together with the Church of St. Nicholas. Later events in church history mark different points in time: a church in Chizhovo burned down in 1752; a new one was subsequently built and was closed around 1885. This span of time runs from the 17th to the 19th century, bringing several phases of local history into view.

In 2008, librarian Tatyana Dmitriyevna Manayenkova set up the mini-museum “Ugolok stariny” in the Chizhovo library. Historical everyday objects on display at the time included a charcoal iron, traditional vessels and tools, clothing, and embroidered cloths. Alongside the milestones in church history, this also brings material everyday life into focus.

Nature and Routes in Ryazan Oblast

In the wider destination of Ryazan Oblast, Meshchersky National Park is a destination in its own right for nature lovers. It covers 103,014 hectares in the Ryazansky and Klepikovsky districts. The floodplains of the Oka and Pra rivers within the park were designated wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention in 1994. The park’s size and the protected status of its river areas offer two distinct points of reference for anyone interested in the nature of the oblast.

Of the ten established tourist routes in Meshchersky National Park, six are water routes. The park also has five ecological trails: the long “Paustovsky Trail” to Kordon 273, as well as the shorter routes “Okno v prirodu,” “Tyukov grad - Chernaya gora,” “Zapovednaya priroda,” and “U zavodi.” If you include routes in your travel plans, check their current availability with the park.

Museums and Crafts in Ryazan Oblast

Ryazan Oblast’s cultural attractions offer a variety of experiences. The Museum of Wooden Architecture in Lunkino features artistic wood carvings, painted wood, wickerwork made from willow rods and other exhibits; around 3,500 objects are on display in total. The Kasimov Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve holds more than 40,000 collection items and offers craft workshops at its “School of Crafts.” Check the museum’s visitor information for workshop dates and booking options.

In Spassk-Ryazansky, the Georgy Wagner Historical and Archaeological Museum presents the history, everyday life and culture of the Spassk area from antiquity to the mid-20th century. Its themes include archaeological and paleontological collections, as well as a nature section about the wild animals of Oksky Nature Reserve. A diorama of Old Ryazan and archaeological finds also illustrate the history of the Grand Principality of Ryazan.

Crafts also offer a distinct way to explore the culture of Ryazan Oblast. The Veniz craft originated in Kadom when the word “Venetian” was shortened to “Veniz” and foreign materials were adapted for local production. An international ceramics festival is held in Skopin every two years.
