Udmurt Republic: Nature, History and Culture
Accommodation in Udmurt Republic
In the Udmurt Republic, you can explore nature and culture at specific locations: Sharkan Nature Park is known for its diverse plant life, while museums and historic estates offer insights into regional history and traditions. When choosing your holiday rental, it helps to first decide which of these experiences you want to shape your stay.
Sharkan Nature Park and seasonal experiences
Sharkan Nature Park stretches across about 16,000 hectares between the Ita and Sharkan rivers. It is home to 507 species of higher plants—about half of the republic’s entire flora. The park is also divided into five diverse functional zones: protected and reserve zones, a zone for organized tourism and recreation, a traditional-use zone, and a buffer zone.
At the Kokmansky Nature Reserve, the activities mentioned vary with the seasons. From July to October, free guided walks are offered on request; in winter, there are ski walks. If a guided tour fits your itinerary, check the current arrangements in advance. This lets you take seasonal offerings into account when planning, without assuming the same program is available every month.
The village of Sharkan is also home to Tol Babay’s residence. The estate includes a carved wooden house, a children’s play area, a horse farm and a café serving Udmurt dishes. Visitors can play traditional Udmurt games and watch theatrical performances. Tours are available at Tol Babay’s house or at the house of Obyda-Kar, the Udmurt Baba Yaga; check availability before your visit. The children’s play area and cultural offerings are specific things families can consider when choosing places to visit.
Museums, homes and traditional stories
The Peter Tchaikovsky Museum in Votkinsk opened in 1940. The exhibition includes a reconstructed interior of a house from the mid-19th century. Exhibits include 18th- to 20th-century furniture, porcelain, postcards, paintings, books and the Wirth piano, on which the composer learned to play. Peter Tchaikovsky’s family lived in Votkinsk from 1837 to 1848, a total of eleven years, before moving to Moscow. Comparing the reconstructed interior with furniture from several centuries shows how different historical periods come together in the collection. Centuries-old linden trees grow in the museum garden; the oldest was 242 years old in 2020.
The Ludorvai Museum Reserve includes more than 20 buildings dating from the late 19th to the early 20th century and offers a glimpse into the everyday lives of Russians, Besermyans and Udmurts from the 19th to the early 20th century. Notable structures include a tent-shaped windmill, a valuable monument to wooden architecture. Fyodor Dragomirov built it in 1912; he came from the Udmurt village of Chem-Kuyuk. The buildings and the windmill offer different points of interest: everyday life across several population groups is presented alongside a distinctive example of traditional wooden architecture.
Idnakar also brings together history and a traditional founding story. The museum reserve is located on the Cheptsa hillfort. According to legend, the hillfort was founded by Idna, a Udmurt hero and prince. From the 9th to the 13th century, Idnakar was a center of cultural, commercial and craft life for the Udmurts. In Sarapul, the Dacha Bashenina art and exhibition complex invites visitors to learn about the history of the house and its residents, enjoy the old park and explore the interiors of the merchant’s residence. Check the current visiting arrangements before you arrive.
Choose a focus for your holiday rental
When searching for a holiday rental in the Udmurt Republic, your preferred focus is a good starting point: Votkinsk is associated with the Tchaikovsky Museum and the family history, while Sharkan is associated with the nature park and Tol Babay’s residence. Ludorvai, Idnakar and Sarapul offer other cultural themes. This way, you can make your choice based on your personal interests.
