Glacier views, waterfall trails and medieval funerary architecture give the Republic of North Ossetia a distinctive character. Experiences range from trails through alpine altitudinal zones to a major necropolis complex. When choosing a holiday apartment, it is worth first deciding what you want to focus on during your stay: nature and landscapes offer a different perspective on the region than its architectural and cultural history.

Gorges, Glaciers and Waterfalls

The trail to the Shalagom viewpoint begins in the village of Kharisdzhin, passes through the Khilak Gorge and continues to the Shalagom tract. On the gorge’s left slope, the North Ossetian Nature Reserve is home to the largest local population of endemic East Caucasian tur, which may also be the largest in all of North Ossetia. The animals live in the subalpine and alpine zones of the Bokovoy Range. From the Shalagom viewpoint, it is possible to observe them in their natural habitat, although sightings are not guaranteed. The moraine also offers a view of the Karaugom Glacier, the largest glacier in North Ossetia. Its icefall is up to 800 m high.

The trail to Shagatsikomdon Waterfall runs along the left terrace of the Tseydon River. It passes through a pine forest with Oriental beech, Trautvetter’s maple and gray alder, growing on brown podzolic mountain forest soils. A steep climb over an outcrop of gray granite leads into a descent to the riverbank; the trail then reaches the waterfall’s lower cascade. Forest, rock and water combine to shape the landscape experience here.

The Tseysky Glacier is the second-largest glacier in North Ossetia. The protected-area administration describes it as one of the most beautiful and accessible glaciers in the Caucasus. The trail begins in a large meadow on the steep left bank of the Tseydon River, at an elevation of 1,958 m. At this destination, the high starting elevation of the trail meets the expansive glacier landscape.

Galdoridon is a five-tiered waterfall more than 30 m high and a natural attraction in Alania National Park. The circular trail begins on the left terrace of the Khareseidon River and follows the entrance to the Khares Gorge to the waterfall. It runs at elevations of 1,800 to 2,200 m; conditions along the route may vary seasonally. Chifandzar is a raised bog that originated as a lake and is a natural monument of Alania National Park. A designated rest area is also among the described places to visit: it is in a clearing at the entrance to the mudflow barrier.

Cultural History in Dargavs

The Dargavs necropolis complex is a cultural monument of federal significance. It is located in the old village of Dargavs, in the valley of the same name, 42 km from Vladikavkaz. The ensemble comprises 95 tomb structures of various types, dating from the 14th century to the first third of the 19th century. Since 1978, the complex has been a branch of the National Museum of the Republic of North Ossetia–Alania.

The architecture and burial customs of the Dargavs necropolis complex reflect the socioeconomic conditions and religious beliefs of the Ossetian population in the late Middle Ages. The Khilak defensive wall, also known as the Gutievskaya defensive wall, likewise points to the region’s long history: according to scholars, it was built in the 5th to 8th centuries AD.
