Mari culture, natural history and a varied landscape come together in Sernurskiy District. Sacred groves, a historic larch grove and museum collections offer different points of interest. The district is in the north of the Republic of Mari El. The district’s longest rivers are the Lazh and the Nemda; the region’s rivers flow into the Vyatka.

Mari Traditions and Museum Themes

Sernurskiy District is considered one of the oldest centres of traditional Mari culture. There are 113 sacred Mari groves (küsoto) in the area, 47 of which are considered active. Mari prayers take place in sacred groves, which are also considered natural landmarks. This brings cultural tradition and landscape together in a theme that is particularly distinctive of the region.

The geographer Nikolai Vasilyevich Ivanov made bird and animal specimens; Vissarion Petrovich Losmanov assembled a collection of butterflies and insects, including species from the Republic of Mari El and neighbouring republics. The two collections offer different perspectives on the region’s nature: one through animal specimens, the other through the diversity of insects.

One guided tour focuses on the flora and fauna of Sernurskiy District and the Republic of Mari El. Check the current arrangements with the museum before your visit. Another tour, “Sernur v sudbe poeta N. A. Zabolotskogo” (“Sernur in the Life of the Poet N. A. Zabolotsky”), explores the poet Nikolai Zabolotsky’s childhood in Sernur. The memorial exhibition includes the zemstvo classroom where he studied, school items from the early 20th century, and the furnishings of the house where his family lived. Natural history and literary history therefore feature as two very different museum themes; it is also advisable to check availability in advance for this tour.

Forests, Ridges and Natural Landmarks

The larch grove in Bushkov Forest was established in 1905 by the Urzhum forestry entrepreneur Bushkov and is considered an important natural landmark. Another notable natural site is Nolkin Kamen: this geological and botanical natural monument lies on the border between Sernurskiy and Kuzhenerskiy districts. The two places represent different landscape features: a planted larch grove and a natural monument on a district boundary.

The highest areas of Sernurskiy District lie in the southwest, where the Mari-Vyatka Ridge runs. The forests also have a botanical dimension: they are home to plants listed in the Red Data Book of the Republic of Mari El, including the Turk’s cap lily, lungwort and a species known as “volyanika chornaya”. Visitors interested in landscapes and plants will find different points of interest here than in Mari traditions or the museum collections.

Experiences and Trip Planning

The residence of the Mari Father Christmas, Yushtö Kugyza, is in Kuknur. Visitors can follow a fairy-tale trail and play traditional folk games. Visits are by prior request, so arrange yours well before you arrive. This experience has a different focus from a museum visit: the fairy-tale trail and folk games take centre stage.

When choosing a holiday apartment, it may help to first consider which themes you want to shape your trip: Mari culture and sacred groves, the museum’s natural history, literary history, or landscapes and plants. The places and activities mentioned do not make up a single itinerary; rather, they show the different ways to explore the district.
