Kokshaysk combines striking church architecture with mountain and lake scenery, historic memorial sites and water sports. This offers a range of options when planning your holiday: architectural history and local heritage, views and a green meadow by the lake, or active hours on the water.

Church Architecture and Local History

The Pokrovskaya Church is considered a landmark of Kokshaysk. Its unusual architecture combines building styles used by Old Russian masters with influences from a more recent period. The church was built in 1793, with donations from a merchant from Tsaryovokokshaysk. The building can therefore be understood through several specific aspects: its appearance, when it was built and the support that made its construction possible.

The Museum of the History of Kokshaysk complements this focus on a single building with exhibits on everyday life, archaeological finds and local history. The exhibition is divided into ten sections; the museum opened in 1994. If you plan to visit, check current visitor information in advance.

Memorial Sites and Historic Routes

The obelisk commemorates the soldiers who fell in the Second World War. Another memorial commemorates Yemelyan Pugachev’s stay in Kokshaysk on 16 July 1774. It stands on the east side of the road between Kokshaysk and the landing stage and was erected in 1987.

A tourist route presents Kokshaysk as the first Russian city in the Mari region. Topics on the historic route include the first voivodes and the builders of the fortress, as well as the visit to the town by the future Emperor Alexander III and a school named after him. The tourist route “In the Footsteps of Yemelyan Pugachev” runs through Kokshaysk. These topics offer different ways to explore local history, from early administrative and fortress matters to specific memories of visits and events.

Mountain, Chain of Lakes and Water Sports

Sokolnaya Mountain lies in the southeast of Kokshaysk and offers views of the surrounding area. A chain of lakes lies on the edge of the town and includes Lake Krugloye; a green meadow surrounds the lake. The mountain views and the meadow landscape by the water offer contrasting settings. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you would rather focus on the scenery and views or on the historical attractions.

Wake Village in Kokshaysk offers wakeboarding, wakesurfing, wakeskating and water skiing. Activities take place behind a Malibu Wakesetter 21 VLX towboat or on a reversible cable winch. Visits are by prior arrangement. Water sports are therefore another clearly defined attraction, alongside church architecture, the museum and historic routes.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Kokshaysk, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: local history, scenery or water sports.
