In Vilga, a memorial commemorates people and events from the Great Patriotic War. It was erected for the 50th anniversary of victory in the war of 1941 to 1945 and commemorates 88 residents of Vilga who died between 1941 and 1945. The names of 41 airmen from the 5th Air Defence Division are also engraved on slabs of stone gabbro-diabase. They died defending the airspace over the Onega region.

A memorial with several layers of remembrance

The inscription connects the remembrance of Vilga residents with that of airmen whose service was devoted to protecting the airspace over the Onega region. The two figures refer to different groups: 88 residents and 41 airmen. The material of the slabs is also part of the memorial’s appearance: the names are engraved in stone, rather than simply mentioned as part of a brief dedication. Those interested in history and local remembrance will find a tangible connection here to Vilga and the years 1941 to 1945.

Nature and culture in the Republic of Karelia

Other nature and culture attractions are part of the wider destination of the Republic of Karelia; they are not features of the memorial or Vilga. In the Kivach Nature Reserve, an introductory excursion includes an outdoor walk to Kivach Waterfall, as well as a visit to the arboretum and the nature museum. The waterfall is on the Suna River in central Karelia. It is 10.7 metres high and, after the Rhine Falls, is Europe’s second-largest lowland waterfall.

Near the excursion area, a 1,000-metre circular trail passes through a forested area along the banks of the Suna. The excursion lasts 1 to 1.5 hours. The trail length and excursion duration therefore offer two different points of reference for planning. Check the conditions and booking details of the excursion with the operator.

Wooden architecture and petroglyphs

The Kizhi Museum Reserve displays 89 monuments of traditional wooden architecture in the open air. These include old chapels and houses, mills, granaries, threshing barns, and drying racks. Visitors can see inside the Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God and peasant houses, where traditional peasant crafts are demonstrated. The Kizhi Pogost is an architectural ensemble that includes the world’s only multi-domed wooden Church of the Transfiguration. The site thus offers a look at individual buildings and crafts as well as a unique ensemble.

The World Heritage site of the Onega and White Sea petroglyphs comprises 4,500 Neolithic rock carvings in the Republic of Karelia. The Onega petroglyphs number more than 1,200 figures in Pudozhsky District; most are located on the central capes of Pery Nos, Besov Nos, and Kladovets. The White Sea petroglyphs have a different focus: they mainly depict hunting and sailing scenes, along with related equipment, as well as animal and human footprints. The Belomorsk petroglyphs are located in the lower reaches of the Vyg, near its mouth at the White Sea, 6 to 8 kilometres from Belomorsk, and comprise more than 2,000 different carvings.

Different landscapes, different highlights

The national parks of the Republic of Karelia also represent different regional themes. Kalevala National Park was established to protect a large area of natural forest. Vodlozersky National Park extends across the Republic of Karelia and Arkhangelsk Oblast and is one of the world’s largest wilderness reserves. Paanajärvi National Park is located in Louhi District in northwestern Karelia. Attractions for visitors there include landscapes, rich plant and animal life, pristine tranquillity, and excellent fishing opportunities. Another notable landscape is the Marble Canyon, which forms the basis of Ruskeala Mountain Park.
