Suoyarvsky District offers opportunities to experience nature and gain insights into Karelian culture. One notable natural area is the Tolvoyarvi State Protected Landscape Area of Regional Significance. In Veshkelitsa, themed excursions and cultural activities add to the region’s appeal.

Among Eskers, Marshland and River

The Tolvoyarvi Protected Landscape Area is in Suoyarvsky District, in the Loimola rural settlement and around the settlement of Tolvoyarvi. Its terrain is gently hilly and undulating, and is also shaped by numerous extensive esker ridges—long, narrow elevations in the landscape. Depending on the area, 10 to 45 percent of the territory is marshland. In the protected area, the Tolvoyoki River has rapids and a waterfall. Hills, eskers, wetlands and river features offer different points of interest for anyone who enjoys taking a closer look at the landscape while travelling.

Excursions and Traditions in Veshkelitsa

The Veshkelyus Ethnocultural Centre offers themed excursions around Veshkelitsa and its surroundings. Ask the centre about current availability. Possible workshop topics include clay modelling, willow weaving, painting and weaving; it is best to check directly which workshops are currently offered. A folklore ensemble from Veshkelitsa is also part of the cultural programme, performing songs in Karelian and Finnish. Be sure to confirm in advance whether a performance is possible during your visit.

If you take different interests into account when planning your trip, you can consider nature, themed excursions, crafts and music as distinct highlights. The activities in Veshkelitsa depend on current availability, while the protected area offers its own natural appeal through its terrain and river features.

More to Discover in the Republic of Karelia

The following examples relate to the wider travel destination of the Republic of Karelia and offer a broader perspective beyond Suoyarvsky District. They give an impression of other nature and cultural experiences in the republic, rather than features specific to the district.

At Kivach Nature Reserve, an introductory excursion includes an outdoor walk to Kivach Waterfall and visits to the arboretum and the nature museum. Near the excursion area, a 1,000-metre circular trail runs through a patch of forest along the banks of the Suna. An excursion along the 1,000-metre circular trail by the Suna takes 1 to 1.5 hours. The waterfall itself is on the Suna River in central Karelia and has a drop of 10.7 metres. It is Europe’s second-largest lowland waterfall after the Rhine Falls. The Kizhi Open-Air Museum offers another cultural experience in the Republic of Karelia. It displays 89 monuments of traditional wooden architecture outdoors, including chapels and houses, mills, granaries, threshing barns and drying racks. Visitors can explore the interior of the Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God and of peasant houses, where traditional rural crafts are demonstrated. The Kizhi Pogost, an architectural ensemble featuring the world’s only multi-domed wooden Church of the Transfiguration, is also in the Republic of Karelia.

The rock carvings offer different perspectives on the cultural history of the Republic of Karelia. The UNESCO World Heritage property of the Onega and White Sea Petroglyphs comprises 4,500 Neolithic rock carvings. The Onega petroglyphs include more than 1,200 figures in Pudozhsky District, most of them on the three central capes of Pery Nos, Besov Nos and Kladovets. The White Sea petroglyphs mainly depict hunting and sailing scenes and their associated equipment, as well as animal and human footprints. The groups therefore differ both in their geographical locations and in the motifs depicted.
