Shyoltozero brings Vepsian culture to life through several distinct themes: the ethnographic museum, wooden houses, the stone winter church and the annual cultural festival. The Sheltozero R. P. Lonin Vepsian Ethnographic Museum is dedicated to the material and spiritual culture of the Vepsians. Together, these highlights show what you can focus on when exploring the village: everyday culture, architectural styles and traditions. So if you are looking for a holiday rental, it helps to decide on the purpose of your trip first—for example, historic village architecture or a particular festival date.

Vepsian architecture in the village

Shyoltozero’s historic buildings have survived only in fragments. They are best preserved along Goristaya, Lisitsynoy and Pionerskaya Streets. This distinction helps put the village’s appearance into context: the focus is on particularly representative streets and individual buildings, not on a continuous stretch of preserved historic buildings. The residential houses reflect key features of Vepsian folk architecture from the late 19th century to the first half of the 20th century.

Notable examples include the Melkin House, an outstanding monument to the wooden architecture of the Vepsians of Prionezhye. The house of D. E. Tuchin, relocated to Sheltozero, represents a different, functionally divided building type: a traditional single-storey wooden complex house in Prionezhye, with the residential and utility sections combined under a shared gabled roof. Bringing both sections together under one roof is a defining feature of this type of house.

The stone Winter Church of Saint Matthew the Apostle was built in 1837 and still stands today. It is in the village centre, on elevated ground by the river, and is considered an architectural landmark. Its appearance changed during the Soviet era: the church lost its dome and bell tower and gained a massive extension. Shyoltozero is therefore home to two distinct architectural records side by side: a stone church with its own building history and Vepsian wooden houses.

Cultural festival and walking tour

Another highlight in the annual calendar is the Vepsian cultural festival “ELONPU”. It takes place in Shyoltozero every year on the second weekend of July. The programme includes traditional craft workshops and concerts by national ensembles; individual annual programmes may vary. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates and programme for that year before making plans. Unlike the buildings, which are there all year round, the festival’s dates determine whether it falls during your stay.

The cultural centre’s walking tour is called “Shyoltozero – an Old Vepsian Village. Small Villages”. If you would like to include it in your plans, check the arrangements with the museum in advance. This way, you can plan the tour as a separate activity alongside the festival and architecture.

Putting it in context: the wider destination of the Republic of Karelia

In the wider destination of the Republic of Karelia, the Kizhi Museum Reserve focuses on traditional wooden architecture. It displays 89 monuments outdoors, including old chapels and houses, mills, storehouses, threshing barns and drying racks. Visitors can also see the interiors of the Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God and peasant houses; traditional peasant crafts are demonstrated inside the houses. The collection offers another perspective on the variety of traditional wooden architecture in the Republic of Karelia.
