In Ufa District, you can encounter Russian culture in many forms: as a song tradition, in historic buildings, in ethnographic exhibitions, and as knowledge passed down through generations. These themes come particularly vividly to life in Krasny Yar and Yumatovo. The two places represent different focal points—from the history of a division and the diversity of regional cultures to a cemetery as a place of remembrance.

Krasny Yar: Song, History, and Folklore

The Museum of Old Russian Song is part of the Ethnopark of Russian Culture in the village of Krasny Yar. The village’s cultural heritage also includes the House Museum of the 25th Chapayev Division. Its interactive tour takes visitors through the house, built in 1880, of Russian priest Fyodor Avksentyevich Belsky and explores events from the Russian Civil War of 1918 associated with the building. To check whether the tour is currently available, it is advisable to contact the organizer.

Another historical connection dates back to June 1919: on June 7 and 8, the headquarters and a field hospital of the 25th Rifle Division, commanded by V. I. Chapayev, were located in the house museum. The tour about events of the 1918 Civil War and this specific episode from 1919 are distinct historical connections to the building.

Intangible cultural heritage also shapes Krasny Yar’s cultural identity. This includes the singing traditions of the “Ivushka” folk ensemble. Following a meeting of the Expert Council on December 18, 2025, its inclusion as intangible ethnocultural heritage was announced. The method of making a pie filled with pickled cucumbers is also considered part of the village’s cultural heritage; its registration was reported in 2025. In Krasny Yar, musical traditions and a distinctive culinary tradition thus go hand in hand.

Yumatovo: Exhibitions and a Place of Remembrance

In 2024, the Yumatovo Ethnographic Museum presented a total of 14 exhibitions. These included displays on the cultures of the Bashkirs, Chuvash, Tatars, Mordvins, and Mari, as well as a Russian peasant room. The presentations offered different ways to explore culture and everyday life; the number of exhibitions and their contents may change. The 2024 Museum Night program also included a tour of the museum rooms and workshops.

Another focal point in Yumatovo is the military cemetery. It includes a mass grave and 119 pyramid-shaped memorial stones: 104 bear the names of those killed, while 15 are unnamed. The site’s themes therefore differ markedly from those of the ethnographic exhibitions—in this place, remembrance takes center stage.

The Wider Natural and Cultural Setting

Beyond the local cultural attractions, the broader destination of the Republic of Bashkortostan offers another perspective. The Toratau UNESCO Global Geopark is located in the Republic of Bashkortostan. It includes geological outcrops near Usolka and Dalny Tulkas, as well as caves, waterfalls, gorges, mountain rivers, and rugged rock formations. The geopark also preserves the ruins of ancient settlements and fortresses, and showcases cultural heritage, cuisine, and crafts.

Bashkiriya National Park is also part of this broader natural setting. It was established in 1986 as the first and only national park in Bashkortostan, to protect the unique natural resources of the Southern Urals. The specific village and museum attractions of Ufa District and the landscapes and cultural areas of the republic therefore represent different regional levels.
