Discover Osinskiy District through its local history and the natural world of the Osa-Kama area. At the Osinski Local History Museum, architectural history, archaeological history and exhibitions on culture and nature come together. This gives you concrete themes to help plan your trip, from the city’s first stone building to the study of trees and bird calls.

Architectural history and a much older settlement

The Osinski Local History Museum is housed in the former Cathedral of the Dormition. The building was constructed between 1792 and 1824 with funds provided by parishioners. It is a historical and architectural monument, and was the city’s first stone building. At the same time, the museum stands on the site of the former Osinski settlement, which existed from the 2nd century BC to the 3rd century AD. Two distinct historical periods are therefore represented at the same place: the cathedral’s construction and the history of a settlement that began centuries before our era and continued into the first centuries AD. If you enjoy exploring regional history through specific places and time periods, you’ll find a vivid contrast here.

Exhibitions spanning the Peasants’ War and natural history

The exhibition “V ogne Krestyanskoy voyny” covers the Peasants’ War of 1773–1775, led by E. Pugachev. It includes the diorama “Vzyatie E. Pugachyovym kreposti Osa,” which depicts the uprising and the actions of both the rebels and the fortress defenders. The scene thus includes both sides of the conflict. Another exhibition is devoted to the Osinski District during the Second World War; check whether it is currently available before your visit. In Osa, the museum offers a guided walk through the historic district on request, including a visit to the open-air exhibition “Osa. Vremya masterov.” Make arrangements for this walk with the museum.

The Museum of Nature of the Osa-Kama Area is housed in a separate building and features more than 300 species of plants and animals, as well as minerals. The “Priroda Osinskogo Prikamya” diorama is Russia’s second-largest nature diorama. Its total area is 180 m², including its naturalistically rendered foreground. The collection and the diorama offer different highlights: here you’ll encounter a wide range of species and minerals; there, a large-scale depiction of nature with a precisely stated area.

Two excursions, two ways of observing

The museum excursions also differ in their subject matter. On a dendrological excursion, participants observe trees and shrubs, learn about dendrology and explore the relationships between trees, lichens, fungi and animals. They collect leaves and use them to create their own “Young Dendrologist’s Notebook.” The ornithological excursion “Zvukovoy plener. Ptitsy,” by contrast, focuses on birds and their calls: participants observe the birds with binoculars, listen to their calls and try to imitate them. Depending on your interests, you can choose between observing plants and creating something of your own, or watching and listening to birds. The excursions are available on request; arrange them with the museum in advance.

When looking for a holiday rental in Osinskiy District, these themes can help guide your travel plans: would you mainly like to explore the history of buildings and places, view natural history collections or include a pre-arranged excursion? This decision can help you plan your days around the museum topics you’re actually interested in.
