Ondvor on Lake Ilmen can be experienced through two distinct attractions: a sandy beach with a recreation area and the history of a jazz festival held on the shore. These offer different starting points for planning a trip: the lakeshore shapes a visit to the area, while attending a festival depends on confirmed dates.

Ondvor’s Jazz History

The “Jazz Ondvor” music festival took place from July 14 to 16, 2023, on the beach along the shore of Lake Ilmen in the village of Ondvor. Music from various genres was performed. This was the second edition and part of the “Novgorod Summer” project. More than 3,500 spectators attended the festival. If you would like to combine your trip with a festival visit, check the dates for your intended travel period.

The program included the Oleg Lundstrem Jazz Orchestra conducted by Boris Frumkin, as well as ensembles from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Tikhvin, and Yaroslavl. The combination of an orchestra, ensembles from four cities, and different musical genres gives a clear picture of the event at the time. For jazz enthusiasts, both the lineup and the musical variety of that edition are tangible highlights.

Beach and Recreation Area on Lake Ilmen

In 2024, Ondvor’s beach was described as having a sandy shore and convenient access to the water. A recreation area on the beach opened in 2022; in 2024, it was reported to have a volleyball court, a sports ground, and a children’s playground. The playground is a specific point of interest for families, while the other facilities add opportunities for sports. Before visiting, check the current condition of the facilities and the access and swimming conditions.

When looking for a holiday rental in Ondvor, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on: will your stay center on the lakeshore, or is your trip planned around a specific festival date? When considering specific listings, check whether their location suits your plans, and schedule a festival visit around a confirmed date.

Novgorod Oblast: Nature and Culture on a Broader Scale

The Valdai National Park offers a distinct natural setting within the wider destination of Novgorod Oblast. It covers 159,100 hectares and extends across the Valdaysky, Demyansky, and Okulovsky districts. Mount Ryzhokha is the park’s highest point. A 25-meter-high observation tower stands on it, offering views of the taiga, Lake Velyo, and other bodies of water. A circular trail in the Bor area passes through typical taiga forests on hilly terrain and through diverse wetlands in hollows between the hills. The nature experiences described offer different highlights: views from the tower and landscapes along a circular trail.

The cultural attractions of the wider destination of Novgorod Oblast also extend beyond Ondvor’s jazz history. The Bell Museum Center in Valday displays bells from around the world, with examples dating from the 3rd century BC through the Middle Ages to modern souvenir bells. Opened in 1998, the Museum of the County Town exhibition explores the everyday lives of townspeople, the development of local crafts, and the lives of individual Valday families and well-known summer visitors. In 2017, the “Monument to the Blacksmiths and Bell Masters of Valday” was also erected in Valday. Thus, the region’s cultural attractions include collections on the history of bells alongside themes from urban and family history.
