Discover Demyansky District: Nature and History
Accommodation in Demyansky District
In Demyansky District, landforms and memorial sites offer different perspectives on the area. At Knyazhna Gora, a distinctive geological formation meets the history of early settlement; in Demyansk and Lychkovo, museums and monuments shape the historical perspective. Lake Velyo also provides its own landscape landmark.
Landscape between Hill and Lake
Valdaysky National Park is a large protected area in the European part of Russia. It extends across the Valdaysky, Demyansky and Okulovsky districts of Novgorod Oblast. Near Peski, Knyazhna Gora rises as a glacial remnant hill about 30 metres high. It is also an archaeological monument of federal significance: from the 6th to the 9th century, the ancient settlement centre of Demon na Yavoni was located here. At this site, landscape and history converge on the same distinctive hill.
Lake Velyo lies 40 kilometres northeast of Demyansk. It is the largest lake in Valdaysky National Park and has three extensive lake areas, as well as numerous bays and islands. It stretches 17 kilometres from north to south. If you make the lake the focus of your trip planning, you can take this location into account when choosing where to stay.
Museums and History in Demyansk
The Centre for the History and Culture of Demyansky District is located in Demyansk, in the former home of merchant G. M. Smetanin, an architectural monument from the late 19th century. The exhibition halls cover topics ranging from peasant life to military history. The local history hall explores the history of Demyansk; its exhibits include a display on flax processing by hand and a collection of birch-bark objects. Another hall features household items from the 18th and 19th centuries.
The “Military History of Demyansk” hall contains information about the divisions, airmen heroes and partisans who defended Demyansk during the Great Patriotic War, as well as exhibits from that period. The visitor programme includes group and individual tours, along with themed tours. Check the current visiting arrangements before your visit.
Demyansk’s monuments also highlight different aspects of its history. The monument to the artillerymen of the Northwestern Front consists of a 45-mm anti-tank gun, model 1937, mounted on a high pedestal. The Northwestern Front memorial complex symbolises the Demyansk Pocket and the bridgehead that followed, over which the Front’s troops fought heavy battles for a year and a half. A stone chapel in Demyansk was built in 1884 in memory of Alexander II.
Memorial Sites and Excursion Routes
In 2005, on the 60th anniversary of Victory, a monument to the children who died during the Great Patriotic War was ceremonially unveiled on the station square in Lychkovo. The Centre for the Study of the Village’s History preserves the memory of Lychkovo’s wartime history and of the children from Leningrad who died on 18 July 1941 when a train was bombed at Lychkovo station. Another monument commemorates the soldiers of the 245th Rifle Division of the 11th Army of the Northwestern Front, who liberated the village from German occupation forces on 20 February 1943.
Two military history excursion routes lead to the best-known military memorial sites in Demyansky District: Demyansk–Lychkovo and Demyansk–Tsemena–Korpovo. If you plan to take one of the routes, check in advance how visits are currently organised.
Another Perspective on Local History
In Nikolskoye, the Centre for the Study of V. P. Wrasski’s Heritage is devoted to the ichthyologist and local nobleman Vladimir Pavlovich Wrasski. He founded Russia’s first fish hatchery; the centre also covers its later history. Topics include Wrasski’s family history and biography, his work on artificial fish breeding, and the founding of the hatchery. The history of fish breeding thus complements the military and local history topics found elsewhere in Demyansky District.
Choose the Right Focus for Your Holiday Apartment
Several of the cultural sites mentioned are in Demyansk. If you want to focus on the centre’s exhibition halls, the local monuments and the chapel, you can search for a holiday apartment in Demyansk. Lake Velyo lies 40 kilometres northeast of the town and offers a different landscape focus. If the lake is important to your trip planning, factor this distance into your choice of location.
