Mokshan combines military and literary history with historic churches and a well-preserved townscape. The defensive rampart, a literary and memorial museum, and several distinctive buildings offer different cultural highlights for your stay. When planning, you can decide whether you would most like to learn about the history of the Penza defensive line, the work of writer A. G. Malyshkin, or the town’s architectural history.

Military history at the rampart and watchtower

The 17th-century defensive rampart was part of the Penza defensive line. Its history is presented at the “Storozhevaya bashnya” complex: in 1979, on a section of the rampart, a 15-meter-high watchtower made of pine was built from archival drawings to mark Mokshan’s 300th anniversary. In 2023, the complex was created in place of the wooden tower and palisade. It includes a scale model of a 17th-century watchtower from the Penza defensive line, as well as an observation platform.

Individual visitors can climb the watchtower on their own during opening hours. On Saturdays and Sundays, the audio recording “Govoryashchiye khraniteli istorii” can be heard at 1 and 3 p.m. If you are planning a climb or your visit around the audio times, check the current opening hours and whether the stated weekly schedule is still in effect before you go.

The A. G. Malyshkin Museum

The A. G. Malyshkin Museum is a literary and memorial museum dedicated to writer A. G. Malyshkin; it opened on March 21, 1977. The museum comprises the Malyshkin family’s memorial house and the home of watchmaker Novitsky. The exhibition hall is located in the Novitsky house. These two places offer different points of interest: a commemoration of the family and a space for exhibitions and events.

The museum bakery’s program includes theatrical events and cooking workshops. It also hosts fairs featuring Petrushka, as well as quest tours on the history of Russian everyday life from the 19th to the early 20th century. The exhibition hall’s program includes poetry evenings, meetings with poets, literary and local history events, and music evenings. The offerings therefore vary both by location and by content. Check with the museum in advance to find out which events are currently taking place.

Churches and historic buildings

Mokshan’s churches also reflect different periods of construction. The stone Mikhailo-Arkhangelskaya Church was built between 1827 and 1869 on the site of a wooden church. Historic buildings dating from the late 19th century have been preserved in the town center. The main altar in the Epiphany Church was consecrated in 1898. Together, these buildings offer different ways to explore the town’s history beyond a single historical theme.

Another distinctive building in the center is the former stone fire lookout tower. It is about 15 meters high, has an octagonal floor plan, and once served as a fire lookout tower. It is therefore quite different from the newer “Storozhevaya bashnya” complex, with its model of a 17th-century watchtower.

Which vacation rental suits your stay?

When choosing a vacation rental in Mokshan, you can start with the activities you have in mind: the rampart complex combines military history with the option of climbing the tower and listening to an audio recording at set times during the week. The Malyshkin Museum offers different highlights, from literary events to cooking workshops and quest tours. Churches and historic buildings add Mokshan’s architectural history to these themes. Consider which highlights matter to you, and plan your day around the complex’s opening hours and the museum events currently confirmed.
