Penza combines a long history of parks with paths through the historic centre and a variety of cultural and historical themes. Belinsky Park covers 275 hectares; its origins date back to 1821. The city also offers museums, theatre and other places that explore different aspects of its history. When planning your stay, a good first question is: would you rather spend your time in the park, walking through the historic centre, or exploring culture and history?

Park Paths, City Walks and the Zoo

Belinsky Park includes the three-kilometre-long “Health Trail”. Its length gives your walk a clear framework. The “Red Line”, a tourist walking route through the historic centre, offers a different perspective on Penza. This gives you two distinct types of route: a walking path in the park and a route through the historic city centre.

Penza Zoo also offers several ways to enjoy a visit. Its grounds contain three natural ponds connected by waterways. The zoo also offers guided walks around the grounds and a quiz game on site. The guided tour and quiz offer different experiences; check their availability before your visit.

Memorial Sites and Museums in Penza

On the banks of the Sura stands the Monument of Glory, also known as “The Sprout”. It was unveiled in 1967 to mark the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution. The combination of the riverbank, the monument and its clearly stated historical occasion gives the site a distinctive place in the story of the city.

The Museum of Local History of Penza Oblast brings together city and regional history with a focus on the present and on remembrance. The new wing has permanent and temporary exhibitions on Penza’s past and present, including an exhibition about the city’s honorary citizens. It also houses the three-part interactive exhibition “Laboratory for the Study of Urban Identity”. It explores memory, forgetting and the image of Penza today, and invites visitors to contribute their observations. The museum’s collection includes exhibits on the nature and history of the multi-ethnic Penza region, as well as its spiritual and material culture.

Other museums offer distinct perspectives on people and themes. The I. N. Ulyanov Museum opened in 1970 in the former service building of the Institute for the Nobility. The Literary Museum, which opened in 1989, devotes its exhibition to writers and poets whose lives and work are connected with the Penza region. The V. O. Klyuchevsky Museum opened in 1991 to mark the historian’s 150th birthday; its collection comprises more than 4,000 objects and forms part of the Penza Museum of Local History’s collection.

The story of Vsevolod Emilievich Meyerhold is also present in Penza. His surviving estate was built in 1881 by his father, a well-known wine merchant and producer in the city. The “Theatre of Doctor Dapertutto” at the Meyerhold Museum draws on Meyerhold’s experiments in the style of Commedia dell’arte. A monument to Meyerhold was unveiled on the museum grounds in 1999. Here, the director’s story meets an artistic exploration of his theatrical experiments.

Choose the Right Focus for Your Stay

When looking for a holiday apartment in Penza, you could start by considering which of these aspects of the city you want to shape your stay: Belinsky Park with its three-kilometre walking path, the “Red Line” through the historic centre, the zoo’s activities, or the museums and theatre history. If you would like to combine different interests, these varied themes can help you choose what you most want to visit. This way, planning begins with the experiences that appeal to you most.
