Znamenka brings together church architecture, a former mill building of regional significance and guided group activities. This mix offers different ways to experience the town: you can explore historic buildings or consider an active programme featuring Bogatyr fights and craft workshops. When choosing a holiday apartment, the first question is whether Znamenka’s own attractions will be your main focus or whether you also plan to visit places in Oryol Oblast.

Churches, architectural history and mill heritage

The wooden Church in Honour of Saint Lazarus of Serbia was built on the grounds of the “Zastava” in Znamenka. The Church of the Icon of the Mother of God “Vsekh skorbyashchikh Radoste” has a different architectural history: its building was converted for religious use in 2000. It is located in Znamenka, two kilometres from Oryol, on the right-hand side of the road when leaving Oryol. Thus, the construction of a wooden church and the conversion of a building in 2000 stand side by side as two distinct historical details.

The former building of merchant Bakin’s mill in Znamenka is also part of the town’s history: it is classified as a historical and cultural heritage site of regional significance. The mill heritage adds another cultural theme to the churches’ architectural histories and uses.

Take part and try your hand at crafts at the Znamenskaya Bogatyrskaya Zastava

Active participation is at the heart of the Znamenskaya Bogatyrskaya Zastava. With guidance, participants can take part in Bogatyr fights or try to storm a fortress. The tour is offered as a bookable group programme; confirm current availability directly with the operator.

Pottery workshops and clay toy-making are offered as additional paid group options. This gives you a choice between two different types of activity: guided combat and fortress activities on the one hand, and working with clay on the other. Check current availability for the workshops with the operator as well.

Additional travel ideas in Oryol Oblast

Those wishing to explore more of Oryol Oblast can visit Oryol Polesye National Park. Founded in 1994, the park lies in the north-west of the oblast and covers 77,745 hectares. The park has more than 80 equipped tourist rest and picnic areas. Water lilies can be seen along the “V tsarstve vodyanoy lilii” ecological trail; more than 30 species of animals and birds can be observed at the open-range zoo. The national park therefore offers different experiences, including places to relax, a clearly defined nature theme and wildlife observation.

The Spasskoye-Lutovinovo estate offers another regional perspective. It was the family estate of Ivan Turgenev’s mother in Mtsensk District; the creation of several of his works, including “Rudin” and “Fathers and Sons”, is associated with the estate. The main house and other buildings are surrounded by an old park. It was laid out by I. I. Lutovinov, founder of the Spasskoye estate, at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. You can go boating on Spassky Pond and take a carriage ride through the park. Check before your trip whether these activities are currently available.

When searching for a holiday apartment, it helps to distinguish between Znamenka’s churches, mill heritage and group activities, on the one hand, and Oryol Oblast’s nature and estate attractions, on the other. First consider whether your stay will focus mainly on Znamenka or also on other attractions in Oryol Oblast; you can then tailor your holiday apartment search accordingly.
