Zalegoshchensky District reveals itself through specific historic places: churches in Grachevka and Kazar, Tolstoy’s visits to Kochety, and a monument to glory in the district’s administrative center. Each place has its own focus: the churches tell stories of architectural history; Kochety and Setukha, of historic lives; and the monument, of remembrance of Soviet heroes.

Churches and memorial sites in the district

The Church of the Archangel Michael in Grachevka was built in 1828 and is an architectural monument from the early 19th century. Funds for its construction came from M. S. Sukhotin, Golitsyn, the landowner of the village of Grachevka, and Leo Tolstoy. The site’s architectural history is thus linked to the names of its benefactors.

The Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God in Kazar was completed and restored in 1838. Its full designation is the Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God with a side chapel dedicated to Saint Great Martyr Demetrius of Thessaloniki. The church stands on a high, open bank of the Neruch River. Its architectural history, dedication, and riverside location each give the site a distinct historical and scenic character.

The monument to glory is located in the administrative center of Zalegoshchensky District. Its bas-reliefs honor the Heroes of the Soviet Union. Alongside church architecture and literary history, this offers another focal point devoted to remembrance.

Tolstoy, Kochety and Setukha

Leo Tolstoy repeatedly visited the fairs in Kochety and also came to the village several times in the 1900s. In October 1900, he stayed for about two weeks at his son-in-law’s house in Kochety. Another historic life story leads to Setukha: Zinaida Sergeyevna Sverbieva–Trubetskaya, the daughter of a Decembrist, lived there for more than 50 years.

The history of the men’s monastery in Zhelyabuga can also be dated precisely. On December 24, 2015, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church decided to establish a men’s monastery in honor of Saint Great Martyr Demetrius of Thessaloniki. Zhelyabuga is in Zalegoshchensky District. The decision adds another religious point of interest to the area’s church and life stories.

Nature and estate history in Oryol Oblast

Oryol Oblast offers a further regional focus. In its northwest lies Orlovskoye Polesie National Park, established in 1994 and covering 77,745 hectares. The park has more than 80 equipped tourist rest and picnic areas. An enclosed zoo features more than 30 species of animals and birds. This selection combines nature experiences with designated places to rest and a zoo visit.

Spasskoye-Lutovinovo Estate offers a different focus. It was the family estate of Ivan Turgenev’s mother in Mtsensk County; the creation of several of his works, including “Rudin” and “Fathers and Sons,” is associated with the estate. The main house and buildings are surrounded by an old park, laid out by I. I. Lutovinov, the founder of Spasskoye Estate, around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. You can go boating on Spassky Pond and take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the park. Check before your trip whether these activities are available.
