Nature and History in Pechengsky District
Accommodation in Pechengsky District
Pechengsky District brings together a border region, natural and local history, and unusual places of remembrance. The Pasvik Nature Reserve lies on the border with Norway; Korzunovo is associated with Yuri Gagarin’s period of service, while Nikel offers exhibitions and library activities. This makes it possible to plan your trip around your own interests in nature, culture, and regional discoveries.
Pasvik Nature Reserve: Nature with Visit Planning
Pasvik Nature Reserve lies in Pechengsky District on the Norwegian border and is considered a protected area of particular ecological interest. A permit is required to visit the reserve because of its location in a border zone. Check the current permit procedures with the reserve before your trip.
The Pasvik Reserve visitor centre is in Nikel, outside the border zone. To visit, arrange an appointment by phone: +7 815 54 50 700. The centre has a permanent exhibition about the history and nature of the reserve. This offers a tangible introduction to the protected area, while requiring a separate appointment to visit the visitor centre.
Gagarin, Church Architecture, and Regional History
The first human to travel into space, Yuri Alexeyevich Gagarin, served in the village of Korzunovo in the late 1950s. The Gagarin Museum in Korzunovo displays the cosmonaut’s personal belongings and “space gifts” from Star City. Check current visiting arrangements before going to the museum.
Near the village of Borisoglebsky, on the border with Norway, stands the Church of Saints Boris and Gleb. It was built in 1565 on the left bank of the Paz River. In Nikel, the local history museum connects the history of the Sámi, Vikings, and Russian Pomors with the region. If you plan to visit museums, check current visiting arrangements in advance.
Another notable fact about the region is the Kola Superdeep Borehole in Pechengsky District. It is 12,262 metres deep and is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s deepest borehole. The Friendship Ski Race is also a landmark of the district: its route crosses three national borders. These two very different features add distinct points of interest—technical depth on the one hand, and a cross-border race route on the other.
Nikel and Excursions for Different Interests
In Nikel, the central library offers walks around the town accompanied by a librarian; participation must be arranged in advance. The central children’s library offers in-person and online nature and history excursions along Nikel’s streets. These activities explore local history and natural history in different ways.
The Pechenga Library Organization also offers excursions to natural landmarks around Nikel, including a cedar grove and a waterfall on the Shuoniyoki River. These excursions require a bus and must be arranged in advance. Visits and walks in Nikel are thus complemented by excursions in the surrounding area, which require a different mode of transport.
Choosing Where to Search for a Holiday Rental
When searching for a holiday rental, you can use the activities you’re interested in as criteria for choosing a location. Nikel is relevant for its museums, library activities, and visitor centre; Korzunovo for its connection to Gagarin’s life. If the Pasvik Nature Reserve is your main focus, include the required permit in your plans. Decide on your priorities before searching, then compare suitable locations based on which of the experiences described interest you most.
