Apatity in the center of the Kola Peninsula
Accommodation in Apatity
Apatity lies in the geographical center of the Kola Peninsula. The Khibiny Mountains are north of the city, and Lake Imandra is to the south; Apatity is also at the intersection of important transport routes. This orientation combines a distinctive geographical location with its own cultural and geological themes. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide whether you want to focus on Apatity itself and its local themes or include other destinations in Murmansk Oblast.
Museum Archive and Geological Park
The Museum Archive on the history of exploration and development of the European North features a permanent exhibition of the same name. It is housed in the Center for Humanitarian Problems of the Barents Region of the Kola Science Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Apatity. The subject focuses on the exploration and development of the European North. During exhibition hours, visitors can view the permanent exhibition independently, without a guide. To enter the building, contact a member of staff; check the latest visitor information before your visit.
The open-air Geological Park offers a different point of interest. It is located in front of the buildings of the Geological and Mining Institute of the Kola Science Centre and the Murmansk Geological Prospecting Expedition (MGRÉ). The Museum Archive and the park therefore offer different perspectives: the history of the exploration of the North in one place, and a geological site in the setting of the named institutes in the other. For travelers weighing cultural history against geology, Apatity offers two clearly distinct themes.
The Khibiny and regional perspectives
In Murmansk Oblast, Khibiny National Park preserves the natural complexes and historical and cultural heritage of the Khibiny Massif. Part of the park lies within territory administered by the city of Apatity. For orientation, it is useful to consider the city and the larger administrative area as different geographical scales. This keeps the landscape connection to the Khibiny Massif distinct from the cultural and geological themes within Apatity.
Other themes in Murmansk Oblast can be found in other named places. In Umba, the 5.5-kilometer guided walking trail “Historic Pomor Village of Umba” follows a river to the sea. It offers insights into northern wooden architecture and the everyday life of the Pomors; seven information boards also cover the history of the settlement, the Pomors, and their occupations. The guided excursion must be booked at least two days in advance. Check the current arrangements with the provider.
Also in Umba, the Museum of the History, Culture and Everyday Life of the Tersky Pomors explores their occupations from the 18th to the early 20th century. The exhibition includes fishing, hunting marine mammals, shipbuilding and pearl fishing, as well as carpentry and joinery, woodworking, shoemaking, and women's crafts. Another natural theme in Murmansk Oblast is Teriberka Nature Park, which protects nesting sites of rare birds and two bird colonies of kittiwakes and rare cormorants.
Choosing the right destination
Your preferred focus is a helpful starting point when looking for a holiday apartment: Apatity combines its location in the center of the Kola Peninsula with the Museum Archive and Geological Park; Umba offers Pomor themes, while Teriberka focuses on protected bird populations.
