Istra can be explored through a range of different highlights: the Resurrection New Jerusalem Monastery, with its history and architecture, and parks with memorial sites and activities. When planning your visit, you can decide whether you are especially interested in the monastery and its exhibitions or would rather spend time in the parks.

Monastery History and Architecture

The Resurrection New Jerusalem Monastery in Istra was founded in 1656 by Patriarch Nikon. Its architecture is another distinctive feature: the design of the Resurrection Cathedral resembles the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. This comparison gives the complex a distinctive point of reference and helps place its striking form in context.

The underground Church of Constantine and Helen is part of the monastery complex. The Garden of Gethsemane is associated with walks, while the holy spring is a place to draw water; check current access arrangements before planning these activities.

The Exhibition at the “New Jerusalem” Museum

The “New Jerusalem” Museum presents the permanent exhibition “New Jerusalem. A Monument to the History and Culture of the 17th to 21st Centuries.” It covers the origins of Russian Palestine, the New Jerusalem Monastery and its founder, Patriarch Nikon. After an almost two-year redesign, the exhibition reopened on 1 July 2023. For up-to-date visitor information, it is worth checking the museum’s details.

The monastery and the exhibition offer different perspectives: at the monastery, you can experience its distinctive architecture and the places associated with the complex; the exhibition focuses explicitly on the monastery’s origins and history. If you are interested in both, you can include both in your travel plans.

On the Banks of the Pesotschnaja: Sports and Events

The park on the banks of the Pesotschnaja River has a skate park, a streetball court and a stage for cultural and public events. Sports and entertainment events for children and adults are held there regularly. When planning your visit, it is helpful to distinguish between the park facilities and the events programme: check the current schedule for a specific event.

Memorial Sites and Activities in Central City Park

Central City Park also combines parkland with remembrance. An IL-2 aircraft was installed on Central Alley on 9 May 1965 as a memorial to the city’s defenders. It commemorates the troops of the 16th Army who fought here in November 1941. In December 2016, the stele “Istra – City of Military Valor” was also unveiled beside Central Alley. The two memorials thus refer to different dates: the battles of 1941 and the later installation or unveiling of the memorials.

For exercise, Central City Park has a site for completing the GTO fitness standards. Swings for children and playgrounds for toddlers are also mentioned. The “Garden of My Dreams,” with recreational areas and an open-air bookcrossing library, has also been established in the park. If you are travelling with children, these specific age references can help you choose which parks to visit.

Choosing Istra as a Travel Destination

When looking for a holiday apartment in Istra, your preferred itinerary can be a useful starting point. The monastery’s history, the exhibition and its associated sites appeal to different interests than the memorials, playgrounds and sports facilities in the parks. Consider which of these highlights you want to shape your trip; this will help you choose your destination based on the experiences that interest you most.
