Pushchino was established in the mid-20th century on the high banks of the Oka as a science town. One of the few urban planning utopias of Soviet modernism to be realised, the town was conceived as an ideal place for scientists. Its character is shaped by its architecture and scientific history, as well as its location on the Oka. Nearby, there are also natural attractions to explore.

Science Town and Local History

A guided tour of Pushchino takes visitors to two buildings connected with science: the main building of the Institute of Biophysics and the building known as “Kletka.” The roof of the House of Postgraduates and Interns offers panoramic views of the Oka and the Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve. The tour programme at this building also includes a visit to an artist’s studio. The programme is approximate; details are confirmed on request. To visit the institute, an application must be submitted at least two weeks before the planned tour.

The Pushchino Museum of Ecology and Local History has a permanent exhibition spread across four halls. Its subjects and materials include geology, archaeology, biology and other fields, as well as the town’s history, ethnography, the history of technology and objects of remembrance. The exhibitions thus complement the perspective of the guided tour: alongside Pushchino’s planning as a science town, they also focus on natural history, technology and local history.

Ecological Trails and Natural Attractions

Pushchino is part of the cooperation zone of the Prioksko-Terrasny Biosphere Reserve in Moscow Oblast. In the vicinity of the destination, the reserve has two ecological hiking trails with different visitor conditions.

The guided trail “Doroga k zubram” includes a visit to the Central European Bison Breeding Nursery and the Natural History Museum. It is open every day year-round, except on 31 December and 1 January. Visitors may only enter with a guide. The guided tour is therefore one of the nature experiences where being accompanied is part of the visit.

The “Skvoz' listvu” trail is eight metres above the ground. Ten information platforms are connected by suspension bridges. It operates from April to November in suitable weather and is intended for independent visits without a guide. The two trails therefore differ mainly in whether a guide is required and in their season: one requires a guide and is open year-round, while the other is seasonal and intended for visits without a guide.

Attractions Along the Ecological Trail

The ecological trail in Pushchino also leads to a range of different attractions. Points of interest along the way include the Pushchino Gorodishche, the partly ruined historic Pushchino-na-Oke estate, the “Karstovyy” protected area and the Pushchino Waterfall. History, a protected area and a waterfall offer very different reasons to spend time in the town.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you might first consider how you would like to spend your time: exploring Pushchino’s science-oriented history, its museum and local attractions, or adding nature experiences in the nearby reserve. The tours and trails described here differ in their programmes, seasons and whether a guide is required.
