Yagodnoye: Museum and nature destinations in Magadan Oblast
Accommodation in Yagodnoye
Yagodnoye combines a cultural point of interest in the town with a natural destination that requires a separate trip: the Pamyat Kolyma public museum is in Yagodnoye, while Lake Jack London is 56 km away by road. This lets you plan your stay around two distinct priorities—local history and remembrance, or the landscape of the wider destination of Magadan Oblast.
Pamyat Kolyma Museum in Yagodnoye
The public museum was founded on the initiative of local resident Ivan Panikarov, who also provided the funding. It opened on 30 October 1994, the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Political Repression. The opening date connects the museum with a specific occasion for remembrance, while its name refers to Kolyma. Yagodnoye therefore offers a cultural point of reference whose history also highlights a local initiative.
If you plan to visit the museum, you can check the current visitor arrangements in advance. When choosing a holiday apartment, the museum’s location in town is a different consideration from a trip to the more distant lake: consider whether you want to focus your stay on Yagodnoye itself or also on exploring the region’s natural attractions.
Lake Jack London and its protected area
Lake Jack London is 56 km by road from Yagodnoye. The route and road conditions may change, so check the current route before setting out. The area around the lake has been part of Chersky National Park since December 2022. The protected-area cluster includes the Bolshoy Anngachag and Maly Anngachag mountain ranges, as well as Lakes Elgenya and Lebedinoye, Vosmiozyorny Creek, and the Elgenya River. The landscape therefore includes named mountain ranges and other bodies of water in addition to the lake.
An official permit is required to visit the area around the lake. It is issued by the head of Magadansky State Nature Reserve. Find out about the current permit procedure before your trip. This lets you account for the road journey and the required permit as separate planning considerations alongside your accommodation.
Other landscapes in Magadan Oblast
Other parts of Magadan Oblast also offer a variety of natural attractions. The Elikchanskiye Lakes form a chain of several glacial-tectonic lakes on the main watershed of the Kolyma Highlands. During their seasonal migrations, diving ducks and gulls use the lakes. Zavyalova Island offers a different kind of landscape: it encompasses almost 40,000 hectares of largely untouched forests, rocks, and stony beaches. These examples broaden the view of Magadan Oblast beyond Yagodnoye and the lake.
Cultural events in Magadan Oblast
Magadan Oblast also offers various opportunities to enjoy cultural events at different times of year. In Magadan, the Dzyalbu festival is held every two years in March at the Dyukcha Ethnopark. The Gold Festival takes place every year in July at Dyukcha Park. Their different schedules make March and July distinct times to attend these events.
The Even Khebdenék festival celebrates the start of the year according to the Even calendar. It takes place in June, on the eve of the summer solstice, at a ritual clearing by the Dukcha River. Before your trip, check the current dates and public programs for the events that interest you.
