In Yagodninsky District, Magadan Oblast, very different travel interests come together: the glacial lake landscape around Lake Jack London, the history of Pik Chellendzher and a memorial site in Debin. The contrast between nature, mountain history and remembrance offers several possible ways to focus your trip. When planning, first consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay; this can also guide your search for a vacation apartment or house.

Lake Landscapes and Protected Areas

Lake Jack London is a group of oligotrophic mountain lakes of glacial origin in the upper Kolyma Basin. The lakes lie on the northeastern slopes of the Bolshoy Annachag Range in Yagodninsky District. The lakes of the Lake Jack London area are home to several rare and endemic plant and animal species. Two distinct aspects of nature are therefore central here: the glacially shaped lake landscape and the habitat of its rare and endemic plant and animal species. If you want to focus your trip on landscapes and nature, you can make the lake area a destination in its own right.

Regional Context and Visiting

Within the broader travel destination of Magadan Oblast, the area around Lake Jack London has been part of the “Tchersky” National Park since December 2022. An official permit is required to visit the area around the lake; it is issued by the director of the “Magadansky” State Nature Reserve. Check the current permit procedure before your trip. The Kolyma Highway, officially R-504 “Kolyma,” also passes through Yagodninsky District and connects Magadan Oblast with Yakutia and the rest of the mainland.

Summit History and Remembrance

Pik Chellendzher represents another side of the district. It was formerly called “Chortov Palets” and was also considered one of the most difficult summits to access in Yagodninsky District. More than 30 years ago, seven residents of the Kolyma region were the first to climb the mountain. If you are planning an ascent, check current conditions beforehand.

Remembrance is also part of a visit to Debin. A memorial to the victims of political repression, named “Znak Skorbi,” stands in the former cemetery of the Central Hospital of USVITL. The memorial offers a different focus from the lake and summit themes: in Debin, remembrance of political repression is central. If you want to include memorial culture alongside nature in your travel plans, you will find a distinct point of interest here.

Fishing and Trails

At the Lake of Dancing Grayling, fishing is considered especially successful at sunrise or dusk. You can take these times into account when planning; conditions and catches vary. Another activity option is the “Sleeping Knight” trail to the mountain of the same name: in July 2025, sections of the trail were cleared, markers were added and repaired, and litter was collected. Check the trail’s current condition before hiking. A trip to Lake Jack London by Mi-8 helicopter is another option; confirm current operating details before making plans.

Choose Accommodation Based on Your Travel Interests

When choosing a vacation apartment or house in the district, you can consider the focus of your trip: nature by the lake, a possible ascent, the “Sleeping Knight” trail, fishing at particular times of day or the memorial site in Debin all offer different criteria for choosing a location. Decide which destination matters most to you and check how the specific accommodation is located in relation to your plans. This way, your search will reflect your actual itinerary.
