Dobrovsky District in Lipetsk Oblast is defined most clearly by two themes: the river landscape of the Dobrovsky Nature Reserve and the historic sites of Bolshoy Khomutets and Dobroye. Water, forest and floodplains sit alongside memorials and church architecture. Together, they offer different focal points for your trip: natural landscapes, remembrance and architectural history.

River Landscape in the Dobrovsky Nature Reserve

The Voronezh River flows for about 55 kilometres through the Dobrovsky Nature Reserve, forming an extensive bend. The protected area extends as a two-kilometre-wide zone along both banks, from Krivets to Dobroye. The two measurements describe different aspects: the length of the river within the reserve and the width of the protected zone. Together, they give an idea of the scale of this river landscape.

Habitats in the reserve include pine, oak and alder forests, as well as floodplain bogs and meadows, lakes and rivers. The landscape therefore combines forest and water with open, wet floodplains. Established in 1976, the Dobrovsky Nature Reserve was the first protected landscape area in Lipetsk Oblast. The river landscape thus also holds a firm place in the region’s history of conservation.

Remembrance and Church Architecture

Two distinct memorials stand in the village of Bolshoy Khomutets. In the central square is an eagle sculpture mounted on a stone, commemorating historical events of the 17th century; it was installed in 2021. There is also a stele in the village centre honouring the heroes of the First World War. The two memorials address different historical themes.

The churches also tell the story of the architectural history of Dobrovsky District. The stone Kazan Church, with two altars, is located in Chudovskaya Sloboda in the village of Dobroye. Built in 1869 to replace an earlier structure, it is state-protected as a regional architectural monument. After restoration, it was returned to worship in 1989. The Holy Trinity Church in Bolshoy Khomutets was built in 1892 with funds contributed by parishioners. The Dobrovsky Local History Museum opened on 22 March 1989.

More Nature Destinations in Lipetsk Oblast

The wider travel destination of Lipetsk Oblast includes other distinct nature attractions. The Galichya Gora Nature Reserve lies on the right bank of the Don, in the centre of the oblast. Devonian limestone cliffs, shaped by water and wind, rise there. The reserve protects characteristic forest-steppe communities and groups of rock-dwelling plants on limestone outcrops in the valleys of the Don, the Bystraya Sosna and their tributaries. Galichya Gora consists of six separate sections, was the first nature reserve in the Central Black Earth Region, and is among the smallest nature reserves in the world.

Thousands of day-trippers visit the Regional Museum of Natural History at the reserve’s central estate each year. Its open-air area includes an alpine plant collection, a raptor breeding station and a medicinal herb garden. Check current visitor access before your visit. Another regional attraction in Lipetsk Oblast is Kudykina Gora Park in Zadonsky District. Its character as a recreation, landscape and dendrological park also includes the figure of Zmey Gorynych: a 15-metre-tall dragon with three heads, a pointed tail, claws and scales.
