Sosnovy Bor brings together very different travel interests: art and local history sit alongside memorial sites, sandy landscapes and a play complex for children. In winter, a lit ski trail is an additional option. This mix can help you decide which side of the town you want your trip to focus on—and what to consider when choosing your holiday apartment.

Art, Local History and Remembrance

The Sosnovy Bor Art Museum of Contemporary Art opened on 1 November 1991. It is dedicated to Soviet and contemporary artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. The City Museum has a different focus: it covers the history of the region from early times to the present and also explores military and naval history. This includes the defence of the Oranienbaum Bridgehead and the Baltic submarine and surface fleets during the Second World War.

The memorial sites also each have their own emphasis. The “Defenders of the Fatherland” Memorial Complex, near the former village of Ustye, commemorates the defenders of the Oranienbaum Bridgehead and the sailors of the Red Banner Baltic Fleet. A walking route through Sosnovy Bor includes, among other places, the Church of the Burning Bush. If you plan to follow this route, check its current availability in advance.

Play Complex and Winter Activity

Andersengrad is a children’s play complex and part of the Sosnovy Bor Municipal Park Complex. This means the range of places to visit includes a spot specifically designed for play, as well as museums and memorial sites. If you’re travelling with children, you can take this into account when choosing a holiday destination and accommodation, without setting aside other interests.

In winter, you can ski on a lit trail in the northern part of Primorsky Park. This seasonal activity offers a contrast to the cultural attractions and may be relevant to your travel plans if you’re considering a winter stay. Trail availability depends on conditions, so check before your visit.

Dunes, Forest and Sand

“Belye Peski” is an area that was preserved during the construction of the town. It features high dunes and forest, with a large, deep hollow of fine white sand in the middle. The contrast between the wooded dunes and the bright sandy hollow gives this place its distinctive landscape. Sokolova Street also runs between old, high sand dunes covered with pine forest.

The Small Koporye Fortress offers another connection between landscape and play history. It was built in 1969 as a play town, based on a design by Yuri Timofeyevich Savchenko. The stone play complex is in disrepair and is no longer used as a playground; visitors can view it and stroll along the fountain. Check its condition before your visit.

Another Perspective on Leningrad Oblast

The wider destination of Leningrad Oblast also includes Vepsian Forest Nature Park, located in the far east of the region. It comprises seven reserves with particularly strict conservation rules and numerous lakes. The largest is Lake Lerinskoye, in the reserve of the same name. Notable natural features include preserved old spruce and pine forests in the “Vepsskiy Les” and “Ashchozyorskiy” reserves. These forests are important for many organisms that can survive only in forests undisturbed by economic activity.

Brown bears are found in significant numbers in the nature park, and the wolverine, which is extremely rare in the region, has also been recorded there. The park is also the traditional home of the Veps, a small people of Russia with their own culture and traditions. This regional natural and cultural context offers a distinct travel experience alongside the museums, memorial sites and dunes of Sosnovy Bor.
