In Luzhskiy rayon, lakeside scenery and architectural history meet local history. Lakes Vrevo and Cheremenetskoye, mixed forests, exhibitions in Luga and a cathedral on an island offer different perspectives on the destination. As you plan your holiday, you can consider whether nature, history or architecture should shape your stay; these interests can help guide your search for a holiday rental.

Lakes, forests and springs

The pre-glacial lakes Vrevo and Cheremenetskoye are surrounded by mixed coniferous and deciduous forests. These landscape features and plant communities are rare in Leningrad Oblast. The «Cheremenetskiy» nature reserve complex encompasses both lakes and adjacent areas in Luzhskiy rayon. There are numerous springs along the shores, making the lake water clear and fairly clean. Together, the lakes, surrounding forests and spring areas define the district’s natural character. If nature is your main consideration when choosing a holiday rental, these landscapes may be a starting point for your plans.

Luga: local history and natural history

The Luzhsky Museum of Local History in Luga features permanent exhibitions on Luga during the Great Patriotic War, the nature of the Luzhskiy region, and the district town of L. at the turn of the century. A palaeontological exhibition complements the natural history section with Devonian fossils found on riverbanks. Local history and the history of the Earth thus come together: the subjects include both Luga’s history and finds from geological periods far in the past. Children can take part in interactive events titled «Sokrovishcha drevnego morya». The museum is closed for restoration work; before visiting, check whether it has reopened and whether events are taking place.

Memorials and architecture

On 9 May 2010, the stele «Gorod Luga — gorod voinskoy slavy» was erected in the park opposite «Luga I» railway station. The five-domed Cathedral of St John the Theologian at Cheremenetsky Monastery offers a different historical perspective: built from white limestone in the 16th century, it stands on a high artificial mound in the middle of an island. Its domes, building material and elevated island setting define its distinctive architectural character. Alongside the landscape and museum history, architectural history and sacred architecture are therefore separate interests to consider when planning a trip.

Choose the right kind of trip

When looking for a holiday rental in Luzhskiy rayon, you can first decide what you want your stay to focus on: lakes and mixed forests, Luga’s local and museum history, or the monastery’s architecture. If the museum is especially important to you, factor in its closure for restoration work when planning and check whether a visit is possible again.

In the wider destination of Leningrad Oblast

The Vepssky Forest Nature Park is also part of the wider destination of Leningrad Oblast. It lies in the far east of the oblast and comprises seven reserves with particularly strict protection regulations. Its landscape includes numerous lakes; the largest is Lake Lerinskoje, in the reserve of the same name. Among the park’s special features are well-preserved old spruce and pine forests in the «Vepsskiy les» and «Ashchozyorskiy» reserves. They are important for many organisms that can survive only in forests undisturbed by economic activity. The Veps, a small people of Russia with their own culture and traditions, have traditionally lived in the nature park. These regional natural and cultural themes broaden the picture of Leningrad Oblast; they represent the destination on a larger scale.

Another place in Luzhskiy rayon is Bolshiye Krupeli.
