Kurchatov offers a range of ways to spend your stay: time outdoors, archaeology and everyday culture, as well as technology. Tjoply Bereg Park has a cycle path and a designated beach area. The local history museum combines archaeological material with collections on urban and rural life; the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant’s exhibition centre focuses on energy and technology. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can weigh up whether you would mainly like to spend time outdoors or are interested in history and technology.

Leisure in the Park

The cycle path and beach area offer different ways to spend your free time. When planning, you can decide whether to focus on cycling or spending time in the beach area. Check before your trip whether both facilities are currently available. These two options provide a practical starting point for planning your leisure time, without requiring you to base your entire stay on a single theme.

Archaeology and Everyday Culture at the Local History Museum

The local history museum’s archaeological collection includes material from excavations at the Byki Stone Age archaeological site complex. The “Material Objects” collection also displays items from urban and rural life, handicrafts, weapons and ethnographic objects. These include folk costumes, handwoven textiles, samovars, spring balances and irons; the collection also includes numismatic objects. The different groups of objects range from archaeological topics to crafts, clothing and everyday items.

The exhibitions are spread across seven halls covering a total of 250 square metres. Their themes range from nature, archaeology and ethnography to the traditional crafts of the Kursk region, modern history and the Kurchatov District during the Second World War. If you are planning a family visit, you can think ahead about which of these topics will be most interesting for everyone to choose together. The museum presents several subject areas side by side, rather than focusing on just one historical perspective.

Technology and City History

A monument in Kurchatov is dedicated to Tom Nikolaev, the first chief engineer of the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant. The plant’s Information and Public Relations Exhibition Centre covers nuclear energy, the specific features of the Kursk plant, radiation measurement and protective equipment. Separate exhibitions are dedicated to Igor Kurchatov and the plant’s creators. Alongside the museum’s other themes, this provides a distinct focus on the history of technology when planning your visit, in addition to archaeology and everyday culture.

Kursk Oblast: More Cultural and Natural History Topics

A further focus in the wider destination of Kursk Oblast is nature: the Central Black Earth Biosphere Reserve named after V. V. Alekhin has been part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves since 1978. The reserve is crossed by the “Strelchenskaya Steppe” and “Protected Oak Forest” ecological trails. A nature museum covers the reserve’s history, climate, soils, plants and animals. The reserve can only be entered as part of a guided tour; arrange your visit with the reserve in advance. In Kursk Oblast, nature and educational trails therefore offer distinct themes alongside Kurchatov’s urban collections and technical exhibitions.

Another regional focus is the history of the Second World War. The Kursk Battle Historical and Memorial Museum in Ponyri covers the first days of the war in the district, the occupation, the partisan movement and the district’s liberation on 13 February 1943. A large part of the material focuses on preparations for the Battle of Kursk and the Ponyri defensive operation from 5 to 11 July 1943. A diorama of the “Battle for Ponyri Railway Station on 10 July 1943” depicts the events and people of that day. This thematic focus clearly distinguishes the museum from Kurchatov’s cultural and technological history themes.

The A. A. Fet Estate also offers its own cultural calendar: the museum there was established in 2010 as a branch of the Kursk Regional Museum of Local History. The “Nightingale Night” is held every year in late May, and the Fet Readings take place in early July. If these events affect your travel plans, check the exact dates in advance.
