Fanagoriyskoye: Caves, Waterfalls and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Fanagoriyskoye
Around Fanagoriyskoye, caves, waterfalls, a multi-day hiking route and historic memorial sites draw attention to nature and history. The destinations have different focuses: from a cave with an early written mention to gorges and waterfalls, as well as memorial sites along the route.
A Cave and Waterfalls Nearby
Fanagoriyskaya Cave was first described in 1666 by the Turkish traveller and missionary Evliya Çelebi. Its surveyed length is 1,442 m. This cave therefore brings together a historic first description and a specific measure of its explored length.
Two waterfalls on the Ayuk River are also destinations in the area. The Verkhniy Ayukskiy Waterfall is easier to reach from above, from the road. On the «Goryacheklyuchevskie predgorya» route, it is planned as a stop on the second day; the Nizhniy Ayukskiy Waterfall is the destination of the first day's stage. This gives you a specific point of reference for reaching the upper waterfall: access from above, from the road.
Stages of the «Goryacheklyuchevskie predgorya» Route
On the first day, the hiking route leads from the village of Fanagoriyskoye through the Ayuk River valley and the Semeneevskaya and Burlachenkova gorges to the Nizhniy Ayukskiy Waterfall. The Verkhniy Ayukskiy Waterfall is on the itinerary for the second day. The two waterfalls therefore belong to different daily stages: one is the destination on the first day, and the other is a stop on the second.
On the third day, the route leads from the Ayuk valley via the Podnavisla 1-ya memorial complex to Fanagoriyskoye. The focus of the route thus shifts from the valley, gorges and waterfalls to a historic site. If you include these stages in your plans, check current trail conditions before setting out.
Memorial Sites with Stories of Their Own
In 1986, a memorial was erected on Mount Fonar to the sailors of the 76th Naval Brigade, the soldiers of the 395th Rifle Division and the 332nd Independent Fighter Battalion. In the Chepsi River valley, the Podnavisla memorial complex stands at the site of the former hamlet of Podnavisla 1-ya; the third day's stage passes through the complex. Thus, two different memorial sites near the route complement its natural attractions: one on a mountain, the other in a valley.
Other Perspectives on Krasnodar Krai
Krasnodar Krai offers a broader setting for other landscape and holiday themes. In the «Azovskie kosy» nature park, sea waves and currents shape spits and islands from sand and shells, creating varied outlines. Colonies of various gull, tern and cormorant species are present year-round on shallow coastal waters, at the ends of the spits and on sandy islands; the birds' presence varies by season.
At the «Anapskaya peresyp» nature park, visitors can walk along the coast on broad, golden beaches. Farther from the sea, the sand forms a series of high dunes. This coastal landscape offers a different focus from the hiking and waterfall attractions near Fanagoriyskoye.
The regional «Vinnye dorogi Krasnodarskogo kraya» route is another distinct focus. It presents more than 2,500 years of viticulture and winemaking in Krasnodar Krai—from antiquity to the present day—using interactive exhibitions and installations. Those primarily interested in the history of viticulture when planning a trip will find a different theme here from the hiking stages along the Ayuk.
