Borovikovo draws attention to a clearly defined historical period: a settlement site and two kurgan burial grounds date from the 12th–13th century. Their locations on the southwestern and south-southwestern outskirts give the place a distinct archaeological focus. Two more kurgan burial grounds lie nearby. In addition, the cultural and natural attractions of Kostroma Oblast provide a separate regional context.

Archaeological Traces in Borovikovo

The settlement site from the 12th–13th century is located on the southwestern outskirts of Borovikovo. Kurgan burial ground No. 1, “Pany,” lies on the south-southwestern outskirts, while kurgan burial ground No. 2, “Krucha,” is on the southwestern outskirts; both also date from this period. Together, the settlement site and burial grounds represent different archaeological aspects of the same period.

The surrounding area includes the “Yakova derevenka” kurgan burial ground west-southwest of Borovikovo and the “Fedulovo” kurgan burial ground to the south. This distinguishes the local focus from sites in the surrounding area: “Pany” and “Krucha” are on the outskirts of the settlement, while “Yakova derevenka” and “Fedulovo” add to the archaeological interest nearby.

Forest, Excursions, and Culture in Kostroma Oblast

For a broader travel theme, Kostroma Oblast also offers a focus on nature. The Kologrivsky Les State Nature Reserve comprises two separate areas that preserve the varied landscapes of the southern taiga, with zonal and provincial physical and geographical features. The “Puteshestvie v zapovedny les” tour includes a visit to the ecological trail of the same name, which runs through a section of old-growth southern taiga forest. Check the current arrangements before your trip.

Another regional highlight is the Susanino Museum of Local Lore. Its five halls take visitors through the region’s nature, archaeology, history, culture, and everyday life. In its renewed exhibition, “Na perekrestke istorii i legendy,” the museum preserves Ivan Susanin and Savrasov’s painting “The Rooks Have Arrived” as motifs of importance to the region. The museum also offers walking and bus excursions to places connected with Ivan Susanin, including the Isupovo Marsh and the villages of Derevenki and Domnino.
