Khanty culture, forest and wetland landscapes, and seasonal activities shape Surgutsky District. Cultural sites, cedar forests and winter activities offer different highlights. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can start by considering which experiences you want your holiday to focus on: nature, cultural heritage or winter activities.

Forests, wetlands and archaeological traces

Almost two-thirds of the Yugansky Nature Reserve is covered by forest. The rest consists of wetlands, swamp forests and numerous lakes. Forty mammal species have been recorded in the reserve, including reindeer, moose, bears, foxes, wolves, squirrels, hares, Arctic foxes, lynxes, wild boars, wolverines and stoats. Numerous archaeological monuments from well-known historical periods have been discovered on the 17 km² Barsova Gora. Nature and history thus stand alongside each other as distinct themes.

The Tundrinsky Cedar Forest natural monument borders the village of Tundrino. A 1,300 m ecological educational trail offers walks through the Surgut taiga among centuries-old cedars. Check local conditions before setting out. The stated route length provides a specific reference for planning a walk.

Khanty culture and collections

The National Culture Center in Russkinskaya preserves and promotes the spiritual heritage of the Trom-Agan group of the Eastern Khanty. The «Yuvont-Kot» ethno-site is also located near Russkinskaya: there, tourists can learn about the traditional daily life of a Khanty clan and gain insight into the culture of the Indigenous population. The two places offer different emphases—the cultural center focuses on spiritual heritage, while the ethno-site offers a glimpse into everyday life.

In Ugut, the school exhibition «Istoriya Uguta – istoriya Yugorskogo kraya», established in April 2008, focuses primarily on the culture of the Yugansk Khanty. In Lyantor, the Lyantor Khanty Ethnographic Museum holds more than 12,000 exhibits, mostly ethnographic collections. Next to the museum building is an open-air exhibition, established in 1994, featuring structures representing Khanty architecture. Together, these offer different ways to explore cultural heritage: a school exhibition, collections and outdoor architecture.

The museum grounds host the national festivals «Voroniy den» and «Dary zemli Pimskoy» every year, as well as the summer-welcoming festival «Tryasoguzka» and the ritual festival «Petrov khatl». Check event dates and current arrangements before travelling.

Seasonal experiences

At the Russkinykh ethno-site, visitors can visit the reindeer enclosure, watch the animals being cared for, and feed and pet them. There are about 30 reindeer at the camp, and visitors can also take a ride in a reindeer-drawn sleigh. In summer, activities include fishing on the Trom-Agan River and picking berries and mushrooms; in winter, snowmobile excursions are offered. The seasonal highlights are clearly different. Check the current arrangements with the camp before arriving.

For winter family recreation, the «Kamennyy Mys» ski complex offers skiing and snowboarding on slopes for different ability levels, as well as tubing. These activities differ from the snowmobile excursions at the ethno-site: here, the focus is on slopes and tubing. Check that the ski complex is currently operating before making specific plans.

Context within the wider destination

In the wider destination of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, Samarovsky Chugas Nature Park is located in Khanty-Mansiysk, at the confluence of the Ob and Irtysh rivers. The park aims to protect especially valuable natural areas, rare plants and animals, pristine forests and unique landscapes. Its objectives also include creating conditions for organised recreation and environmental education. This regional context complements the overview of Surgutsky District without conflating the characteristics of the nature park with those of the district.
