On the middle reaches of the Bidzhan lies a natural monument established to protect a special habitat: «Zaliv Cherepashiy» was designated on 16 November 1994 to preserve the habitat and breeding population of the rare, declining Far Eastern softshell turtle (Trionyx). The species is listed in the Red Data Books of the Russian Federation and the Jewish Autonomous Oblast. The 3.6-hectare natural monument lies on the right bank of the river, two kilometres northeast of the village of Preobrazhenovka, in the Bidzhanskoye rural settlement of Leninsky District.

Natural monuments along the Bidzhan and in the mountain massif

A different landscape is represented by the botanical natural monument «Bidzhanskie Ostryaki». Its 542.4-hectare protected area is divided between two municipal districts: 204.8 hectares lie in Leninsky District and 337.6 hectares in Oktyabrsky Municipal District. It protects an isolated natural complex of a mountain massif that provides a habitat for especially vulnerable plants listed in the Red Data Books of the Russian Federation and the Jewish Autonomous Oblast.

«Gora Gomel» is also a natural monument in Leninsky District. It was established on 18 January 2001 and protects an isolated natural complex of a mountain massif as a habitat for plants and animals that require special protection measures and are listed in the Red Data Books of the Russian Federation and the Jewish Autonomous Oblast. Together, the three protected areas illustrate different priorities: «Zaliv Cherepashiy» focuses on a turtle species and its breeding population, while the other two protect natural complexes and especially vulnerable plants and animals.

This distinction can help you choose the focus of your holiday: Are you primarily interested in protecting a rare animal, or would you like to explore botanical and mountain-related nature topics? If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide which of these topics you want to shape your stay in Leninsky District.

More nature and cultural topics in the wider destination of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast

Bastak Nature Reserve comprises two separate areas: the 91,771-hectare Central Cluster north of Birobidzhan and the 36,284-hectare Zabelovsky Cluster southeast of the settlement of Smidovich. Their size and separate locations give an impression of the extent of the protected area within the wider destination of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast.

The ecological tiger trail in Bastak Nature Reserve is two kilometres long, takes two and a half hours, and passes through Amur tiger habitat. It introduces visitors to cedar-broadleaf mixed forests and oak forests as typical tiger habitats, and explains the first successful release into the wild of the rehabilitated tigress Zolushka. The trail is open to visitors year-round, except during periods of particularly high fire danger. Another ecological educational trail runs along the left bank of the Bastak River: this 1.5-kilometre excursion route is open to visitors in the warm season and takes about two hours. These time frames clearly distinguish the two nature experiences without requiring you to assume a particular season.

Nature observations in the Zabelovsky Cluster also vary with the season. In the lotus lakes there, within Bastak Nature Reserve, Komarov's lotus blooms in July; large gatherings of migratory birds can be observed in spring and autumn. When choosing your travel dates, you can therefore choose between summer blooms and observations during bird migration.

The Museum of Modern Art in Birobidzhan offers a cultural perspective on the Jewish Autonomous Oblast. It opened in April 1989 as a branch of the Far Eastern Art Museum in Khabarovsk and has been an independent organisation since 1996. Nature topics such as protected areas and seasonal observations are thus complemented by regional art history as another area of interest.

When searching for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide on the kind of trip you want: Should Leninsky District, with its natural monuments, be the main focus, or are you interested in the Jewish Autonomous Oblast's broader range of nature and cultural topics? Tailor your search to the destination that suits the focus of your planned holiday.
