Zavolzhsk: Bredikhin, Art and Local History
Accommodation in Zavolzhsk
Zavolzhsk can be explored from several perspectives through astronomer F. A. Bredikhin: a central square bears his name, and the Art and Local History Museum has a permanent exhibition dedicated to his life and scientific work. The city also offers art, the history of its chemical plant and a space devoted to peasant life. You will therefore encounter a range of subjects in the city, rather than just a single view of its past.
Bredikhin and the Collections in Zavolzhsk
At the Zavolzhsk Art and Local History Museum, the exhibition on Fyodor Alexandrovich Bredikhin includes a telescope made by “Merz,” personal belongings, photographs and documents. The museum is housed in the former mansion of the Burnayev-Kurochkin brothers, built in 1907–1908 in the Neo-Gothic style. In addition to the Bredikhin exhibition, its permanent displays cover the history of the Zavolzhsk chemical plant and everyday peasant life. The history of science, industrial history and everyday life thus offer distinct perspectives side by side.
The second floor of the museum houses an art gallery named after Russian People’s Artist V. N. Telin. It displays paintings, graphic art, sculpture and decorative arts. Artists from the Zavolzhsk region and from Moscow, Ivanovo, Kostroma, Vladimir, Yaroslavl and other Russian cities are represented. For visitors more interested in art than in the city’s history and everyday life, the gallery offers a distinct focus within the museum.
There is also a place connected with Bredikhin outside the museum: his crypt and those of his family members are located beside the Svyato-Bogoyavlenskaya Church in Zavolzhsk. Together with the central square named after him, it provides another connection to the astronomer. Check current visitor arrangements before visiting the museum.
Art and Nature in Ivanovo Oblast
You can find other cultural and visitor experiences in Ivanovo Oblast in other towns, too. In Plyos, a small Volga town, its natural beauty and unhurried pace have long attracted artists. One of the town’s highest points is called Gora Levitan, or Levitan Mountain. The town also offers a focus on crafts and outdoor activity: the “Folk Crafts of Ivanovo Region” exhibition features weaving and embroidery, products from the Palekh and Kholuy lacquer miniature centers, and a jewelry collection. Plyos Eco-Park has trails for walking and Nordic walking.
Palekh offers a different focus. An icon collection was assembled there, with works dating from the 14th to the 19th century and originating from places ranging from Novgorod to the Urals and from the Volga region to the Russian North. In the 20th century, the building of the “Masterskiye” Art Center housed icon-painting workshops and the “Artel of Ancient Painting.” The town also offers hands-on art activities: at the “BAKANOVA 46” gallery, visitors can try making their own object in the authentic Palekh style. At the Lacquer Miniature Museum, a workshop lets visitors paint a small papier-mâché object with the Firebird, a symbol of Palekh. Check in advance whether the workshop is offered on your travel dates.
Kholuy focuses on lacquer miniatures and embroidery. The State Museum of Kholuy Art has more than 5,000 exhibits and a regularly updated exhibition. The house museum of Vasily Dmitrievich Puzanov-Molev, founder of Kholuy lacquer miniatures, displays simple tools and everyday objects from an ordinary village home. The Kholuy Embroidery and Sewing Artel is reviving the tradition of the ancient embroidery craft; its work is made entirely by hand. At workshops held by the State Museum of Kholuy Art, visitors can paint a brooch, an Easter egg or a cell phone holder. Ask in advance about the current availability of these workshops.
Ivanovo and Kineshma offer further contrasts within Ivanovo Oblast. At the Ivanovo Calico Museum, the collection ranges from old textiles to propaganda textiles from the first half of the 20th century; workshops on printing patterns on fabric complement the theme. Availability may vary, so it is advisable to enquire before your visit. In Kineshma, the history section of the Art and History Museum explores the lives of merchants, their houses and shops, and trade at the time. The art section displays 19th- and 20th-century Russian paintings, including works by Ivan Aivazovsky, Konstantin Korovin and Andrey Schilder, as well as works by painters from Kineshma and temporary exhibitions.
