Mukhortovo is a place of remembrance: an obelisk commemorates those who fell in the Great Patriotic War. The memorial bears the names of 448 heroes from 15 localities. These figures give the memorial a concrete, communal context.

The obelisk and the names

The obelisk features composite panels with a vandal-resistant coating. They bear the names of fallen soldiers from the surrounding villages of Dyachevo, Mysy, Berezniki, Gordyushino, Korsakovo, Sergeyevka, Saltanikha, Kondrashino, Dunikha and Adashevo. The village names make the connection to the surrounding communities concrete and add a second dimension of remembrance to the number of heroes commemorated.

During the first phase of work on the war memorial, floodlights were installed, the foundation and pedestal were reinforced, and the area around the stele was repaved. The foundation and pedestal are part of the structure’s base, while the paving covers the area around the stele. The first phase therefore combined work on the memorial itself with improvements to its immediate surroundings.

Culture in the wider destination of Ivanovo Oblast

In the wider destination of Ivanovo Oblast, the cultural scene ranges from crafts and painting to architecture and regional history. In Plyos, the exhibition “Arts and Crafts of the Ivanovo Region” showcases weaving and embroidery, lacquer miniatures from the Palekh and Kholuy centers, and a collection of jewelry. The icon collection created in Palekh offers a different perspective: its icons date from the 14th to the 19th centuries and come from various parts of the country, from Novgorod to the Urals and from the Volga region to the Russian North. Check the current visitor arrangements before visiting the exhibition in Plyos.

Palekh brings architecture and crafts together. The Church of the Exaltation of the Cross is an architectural monument dating from the second half of the 18th century, built in the Naryshkin Baroque style. At the “BAKANOVA 46” gallery, visitors can try making their own object in the authentic Palekh style. The Museum of Lacquer Miniatures runs workshops where visitors can paint a small papier-mâché object featuring the Firebird, a symbol of Palekh. The history of the workshops is also part of the town: the Palekh art center “Masterskiye” is housed in a building that accommodated icon-painting workshops and the “Artel of Ancient Painting” in the 20th century.

In Kholuy, collections and crafts offer further insights. The State Museum of Kholuy Art has more than 5,000 exhibits and a continually updated exhibition. The house museum of Vasily Dmitrievich Puzanov-Molev, founder of the Kholuy lacquer miniature tradition, displays simple tools and everyday objects from an ordinary village home. The Kholuy Embroidery and Sewing Artel is reviving the tradition of ancient embroidery; its work is made entirely by hand. At the State Museum of Kholuy Art, visitors can paint a brooch, an Easter egg or a mobile phone holder in workshops. Check whether the workshops are currently available before visiting.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can prioritize what matters most: the war memorial in Mukhortovo or cultural destinations such as Palekh, Kholuy and Plyos in the wider destination of Ivanovo Oblast.
