Lezhnevskiy District offers a cultural and historical perspective on wooden architecture, country estates and religious architecture. Lezhnevo is known for its historic cultural monuments and its large number of religious buildings. Other examples range from the home of a folk-art craftsman to country houses, village churches and a historic estate. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a cultural holiday, you can first decide whether to focus on architectural styles, religious history or the history of an estate.

Wooden Architecture, Country Estates and Churches

The house and interior furnishings of folk-art craftsman P. M. Ishkin are considered a masterpiece of wooden architecture. The beautiful, slender bell tower of Znamensky Cathedral commemorates Russia’s victory in the Patriotic War of 1812. The examples appeal to different interests: Ishkin’s house focuses on wooden architecture and interior furnishings, while the bell tower brings together architecture and historical remembrance.

In Voskresenskoye stands the Gornostayevs’ dacha, a country house in the Art Nouveau style. By contrast, the Gornostayevs’ house museum in the centre of the village of Telegino is a characteristic rural manor house from the Eclectic period. Its architecture resembles the urban merchant houses of that era. The comparison leads from an Art Nouveau country house to a manor house whose architecture recalls urban merchant houses.

Voskresenskoye is also known for the ensemble of the Church of the Resurrection; the village of Petrovskoye is home to the Trinity Church. The village of Shilykovo is known for the historic Romanov estate. It is a farmstead belonging to the Holy Vvedensky Convent; the estate includes the Zlatoust Church. In the district, you will therefore encounter both church ensembles and individual village churches, as well as an estate with a monastic connection.

When looking for a holiday apartment, your preferred cultural focus can be a useful starting point: first decide whether you want to centre your itinerary on wooden architecture, manor-house architecture or churches. You can then plan the rest of your trip around the places you would like to visit for that purpose.

Arts and Crafts in Ivanovo Oblast

The wider destination of Ivanovo Oblast offers an additional focus on arts and crafts. The “Arts and Crafts of the Ivanovo Region” exhibition in Plyos features weaving and embroidery, lacquer miniatures from the Palekh and Kholuy centres, and a jewellery collection. It is advisable to check current visitor regulations before your visit.

An icon collection assembled from different parts of the country was created in Palekh. Its icons date from the 14th to the 19th century; the regions of origin mentioned range from Novgorod to the Urals and from the Volga region to the Russian North. The Church of the Exaltation of the Cross in Palekh also offers a distinct architectural theme: it is an architectural monument from the second half of the 18th century, built in the Naryshkin Baroque style.

Kholuy offers further arts-and-crafts attractions. The State Museum has more than 5,000 exhibits and a regularly updated exhibition. The house museum of Vasily Dmitrievich Puzanov-Molev, founder of Kholuy lacquer miniatures, displays simple tools and everyday objects from an ordinary village house. At the Kholuy Embroidery and Sewing Artel, the tradition of old embroidery crafts is being revived; the pieces are made entirely by hand.
