Ivanovo brings together architectural history and an unusual variety of museums: Constructivist buildings stand alongside exhibitions on textile production, art and local history. Anyone who enjoys getting to know different sides of a place will find both an architectural walking tour and collections covering a wide range of subjects here.

The «Krasnaya Nit» architecture route in Ivanovo

The «Krasnaya Nit» project is a walking route from the railway station square to Revolution Square, focusing on Ivanovo’s architectural heritage from the 1920s and 1930s. Much of the route follows Lenin Avenue, providing a practical way to explore the city’s early Soviet architecture. More than 30 monuments from this period have been preserved in Ivanovo.

The railway station is also one of the city’s notable examples: the Constructivist building was erected in 1933 to a design by architect V. M. Kaverinsky. The station and the buildings featured on the «Krasnaya Nit» route offer different starting points for an architectural walk—from an individual building to the legacy of an entire era.

Textile history, from handicrafts to machinery

The Ivanovo Calico Museum focuses on the production of patterned fabrics. The exhibition traces how the process changed, from handwork using wooden rollers, fulling tools, spinning wheels, rubels and pattern blocks to large metal machines. The patterns themselves also evolve before the visitor’s eyes: the museum shows the progression from irregular single-colour ornaments to the familiar multicoloured patterns of today.

The collection includes rare calico fabrics from different periods, ranging from old textiles to propaganda textiles from the first half of the 20th century. The history of production and the art of design come together here. The museum also holds workshops where fabrics are printed with ornamental patterns. If you are interested, check the current dates and participation requirements before your visit.

Museums with surprising collections

The Museum of Industry and Art houses an astronomical clock with 95 dials. The museum’s founder, industrialist and philanthropist Dmitry Gennadyevich Burylin, assembled a collection of weapons, old books, coins, porcelain and other objects spanning from antiquity to the beginning of the 20th century. The clock and Burylin’s passion for collecting offer two different ways into the museum’s history: an extraordinary individual object and the broad scope of a historical collection.

The Museum of the First Soviet illustrates changes in everyday life from the 1920s to the 1970s in four rooms of an improvised communal apartment, using objects, documents, newspapers and photographs. The first section of the exhibition explores the history of Ivanovo and the emergence of ideas about civil society through photographs, documents and installations. The Ivanovo Regional Art Museum displays original works by Kazimir Malevich, Alexander Rodchenko and Olga Rozanova; the adjoining room contains ancient Egyptian objects, including mummies.

Historic buildings and changing cultural programmes

The Shchudrovskaya Palatka is Ivanovo’s oldest brick building. It was built at the end of the 17th century and served as an administrative centre from which an official governed the village of Ivanovo. The Transfiguration Cathedral was designed by Moscow architect Alexander Kaminsky; construction, funded by manufacturer Mefody Garelin, took four years and was completed in 1893. The Dormition Church, meanwhile, is a monument to traditional wooden architecture and dates from around the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries.

The Ivanovo Museum and Exhibition Centre opened fully to visitors in 2019 and hosts art projects, creative evenings and events at regional and federal level. At the Ivanovo Stone Museum, the programme includes screenings of educational films and visual shows, as well as talks on space and natural sciences, museum events and seminars for astronomy teachers. Check the relevant programme for specific dates before your visit.

When looking for a holiday rental, start by asking which side of Ivanovo you want your stay to centre on: architecture, textile history, or museum and art collections.
