Khomutovo: Monuments, Museum and “Patriot” Alley
Accommodation in Khomutovo
Discover Khomutovo through its specific sites of remembrance and local history: a monument to a postwoman, a memorial complex with several elements and a local history museum each offer a different perspective. There is also “Patriot” Alley, designed for pleasant walks. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Khomutovo, consider whether local history, remembrance or a walk will be the main focus of your trip.
Local landmarks and remembrance
The monument to a postwoman carrying a mailbag was moved to the post office building in Khomutovo in the 1970s. It is considered the only one of its kind in the Trans-Urals region. At the entrance to the settlement there is also the “Medved” (“Bear”) stele, another named local landmark.
On the outskirts of Khomutovo, a green space contains monuments to outstanding local residents. The first element of the memorial is a bust of fighter pilot M. P. Vasilyev. He was from the village of Pozdnyakovo, which belongs to Khomutovsky Municipal District, and was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union during the Second World War. In 2016, a bust of Hero of Socialist Labour O. V. Glas'kova was added at the initiative of the local administration.
Across Kirov Street, the memorial continues with plaques commemorating those who died in the war and an Eternal Flame. The memorial complex is considered a symbolic gathering place on days dedicated to military victories. Together, the busts, plaques and flame bring individual biographies and collective remembrance together in one place.
Walks and museum history
Opened in 2022, “Patriot” Alley has star-shaped benches and was designed for events and pleasant walks. It adds a different dimension to the memorial sites: here, the focus is on creating a space for walking. No specific events are designated, but walking is explicitly one of the alley’s intended purposes.
The Khomutovo local history museum was founded in 1964 at the initiative of geography teacher Semyon Nefedyev. Its collection of archaeological finds includes tools used by early humans and fossils. The collection of the People’s Local History Museum at School No. 2 also includes ancient artefacts found by search groups and everyday objects donated by residents. Together, these topics offer insight into earlier finds and everyday life, as passed down by people from the area.
In November 2024, the museum returned to its former location in the building of the former library at 2 Kolkhoznaya Street. The exhibits had not been on display for several years beforehand. Its founding in 1964 and its return to its former location in 2024 mark different stages in its history.
The wider setting: Irkutsk Oblast
In the wider travel destination of Irkutsk Oblast are Lake Baikal, in the southeast of the oblast and part of the UNESCO World Heritage List, and Pribaikalsky National Park. These regional attractions provide a broader context than Khomutovo’s local memorial and museum sites.
The Circum-Baikal Railway is also a regional route in Irkutsk Oblast. A suburban train journey runs along Lake Baikal. The route is open for independent travel year-round; check the operator’s latest travel information before setting out.
You can choose where to stay based on the focus of your plans. If you want to focus on Khomutovo’s monuments, local history museum and alley, direct your search to Khomutovo. If your trip also includes Lake Baikal, the national park or the railway route, plan these destinations separately using the relevant travel information. This will keep your holiday rental search focused on the place you actually want to use as your base.
