The Republic of Ingushetia lies on the northern slopes of the Greater Caucasus; its highest point is Mount Shan, at 4,451 metres. Alongside its mountain scenery, around 2,000 medieval towers are among the region’s notable features. The region is also home to the federally significant Ingushski State Nature Reserve and trails leading to a waterfall. When planning your trip, you can give different weight to architecture, nature and mountain sports.

Medieval towers and distinctive architectural forms

Among the best-known tower complexes are Vovnushki, Egikal, Targim, Leimi, Ozdik and Khamkhi. Vovnushki has a distinctive layout: two straight towers stand on a rock and share a wall. A separate defensive bastion stands on the opposite slope of the gorge. The complex therefore includes both a group of structurally connected towers and a separate fortification.

Egikal is one of the largest tower complexes in mountainous Ingushetia. Around the hamlet are underground, semi-underground and above-ground burial sites from pre-Islamic and Muslim times. Remains of Ingush ancestors can be seen in the crypts known as “sun tombs.” Thus, in Egikal, different burial practices are part of the historical landscape alongside the tower structures.

Erzi: a town and its towers

In the Middle Ages, Erzi was a large town with more than 100 architectural structures. Most of its tower buildings have five storeys; the tallest tower is up to 30 metres high. These details combine a description of an entire historic urban landscape with specific measurements of individual structures. If you are interested in architecture, they offer another perspective on the region’s built heritage, alongside Vovnushki’s distinctive forms and the historical diversity around Egikal.

Mountain nature and mountain sports

The Ingushski State Nature Reserve is located in Ingushetia and is of federal significance. An ecological hiking trail unveiled in 2025 leads through the mountains to the 37-metre-high Eka-Khozhinsky Waterfall. So, as well as tower complexes, your trip plans can include a specific natural attraction and a mountain route.

Mount Tseylom (Gaikomed) is a popular venue for the Russian rock-climbing championships. For a different kind of trip planning, note the status of the ski slope at the Armkhi resort: it is out of operation until 2029 because the cable car is being dismantled. If your trip is planned for after 2029, check the slope’s status again.

Keep your reason for travelling in mind when looking for a holiday apartment

When looking for a holiday apartment, first consider what will be the main focus of your trip: the forms and history of the tower complexes, nature and the hiking trail, or mountain sports. You can take these priorities into account when choosing where to stay without treating them as a single type of trip. If skiing is your main reason for travelling, be sure to factor in the restriction at Armkhi.
