Makhachkala: City History, Theatre and Architecture
Accommodation in Makhachkala
Makhachkala’s cultural history can be explored from several perspectives: multimedia history presentations, historical photographs of urban development, theatre history and architecture. This makes the city interesting if you don’t want to reduce its culture to a single landmark. As you plan your trip, you can first consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay.
City history at the Historical Park and City Museum
The multimedia historical park “Russia – My History” is located at 31G Imam Shamil Avenue in Makhachkala. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; last admission is at 6:30 p.m. If you plan to make the park a set part of your itinerary, check the latest visitor information before your visit.
The Makhachkala Museum of City History offers a different perspective on the city. To mark the city’s 165th anniversary, the museum opened the exhibition “Makhachkala. 1948 – Photo Album on Urban Development from 1948” on 15 November 2022. It included photographs, documents, plans and maps. The historical context and range of materials give the subject a tangible form: urban development is presented not only as a finished streetscape, but also through plans and photographic views.
Collections and Theatre History
The main museum of the National Museum of the Republic of Dagestan named after A. Takho-Godi is housed in a 19th-century merchant’s house in Makhachkala. Its collections comprise around 190,000 objects. These include paintings and sculptures, decorative and applied arts, ethnographic collections, old manuscripts and archaeological finds, as well as edged and firearms and jewellery. This breadth brings together different ways of engaging with art, everyday culture and the past, without limiting the collection to a single period or type of object.
The Museum of the History of Theatre in Dagestan focuses on the origins and development of theatre in the Republic of Dagestan. Its collection includes set and costume designs, theatre posters and photographs, as well as manuscripts by well-known theatre figures. It also features stage costumes and set pieces. Together, these collection areas show different facets of theatre: its visual design, its public announcements and the written records left by the people who shaped it. Those interested in the performing arts will find a different focus here than in the city history collections.
Architecture in the City and in Dagestan
The Central Juma Mosque also makes an architectural statement in Makhachkala. It is designed in the classical Turkish architectural style. Its main dome is surrounded by four semi-domes—a clear geometric arrangement that differs from the thematic diversity of the museum collections.
The wider travel destination of the Republic of Dagestan also offers other distinctive places and landscapes. The citadel of Derbent contains archaeological remains of a bathhouse, several underground water cisterns, a 5th-century Christian church and an 8th-century mosque. The fortifications and medieval buildings of the old town, known as magalims, form a cultural landscape there; nine of the original 14 gates remain. These are insights into the cultural heritage of the Republic of Dagestan, not features of Makhachkala.
The Tobot Waterfall on the Khunzakh Plateau offers a contrast in landscape: it lies at an altitude of 1,690 metres at the head of the Tsolotl Canyon. It has its greatest flow from May to July; in winter, it freezes. Its exact height is unknown, with estimates ranging from 50 to 100 metres. These seasonal differences may influence which themes you choose to focus on at the level of the Republic of Dagestan.
If you’re looking for a holiday apartment in Makhachkala, you can use your cultural interests to guide your trip planning: city history, theatre, collections or architecture. If you plan to visit the multimedia historical park, it’s a good idea to check its latest visitor information in advance.
