Kozlovsky District combines a distinctive waterscape with protected steppe areas and historic cultural connections. A 30-kilometer stretch of the Volga in the Kuybyshev Reservoir, two nature reserves of different sizes, and architectural and museum history give the region several distinct highlights. When choosing a holiday rental, it may be helpful to first decide whether you are most interested in the river landscape, steppe or culture. These differences provide a factual basis for deciding which aspect to focus on during your stay.

The Volga, the Reservoir and the Anish

Kozlovsky District includes a 30-kilometer stretch of the Volga in the Kuybyshev Reservoir. Along this stretch, the reservoir is 2–4 km wide and 6–8 m deep. The right bank is high and, with the exception of the Anish estuary, is not flooded. The river course is also part of the landscape: the lower Anish flows through Kozlovsky District and empties into the reservoir. This gives the area two distinct connections to water: the Volga in the reservoir and the river that flows into it. The Anish estuary is also the explicitly stated exception to the general description of the right bank.

Comparing Two Steppe Nature Reserves

Nature conservation and steppe are the focus of two regional state nature reserves. The Attikovskiy Steppe Slope is located in the rural settlement of Attikovo. It was established in 1996 to protect and study a steppe biocoenosis unusual for Chuvashia, expanded in 2006, and covers 255.5 ha. The Kovyl'naya Steppe Reserve is located in the area of the rural settlement of Tyurlema, on the elevated right bank of the Volga. It was also established in 1996 and covers 38.2 ha. The area figures make the difference in size immediately clear: Attikovskiy is considerably larger. At the same time, the protected areas have different defining features. The Attikovskiy Steppe Slope focuses on protecting and studying the steppe biocoenosis. The Kovyl'naya Steppe protects a stretch of steppe described as unique to the Republic of Chuvashia, where feather grass listed in Russia's Red Book grows.

Historic Cultural Connections

Cultural history is also tied to specific places. In Kozlovka, on the banks of the Volga, stands the merchant Grigory Volchkov's house, built in 1914. In the village of Nizhnee Anchikovo is the Museum of Sergei Nikolayevich Butyakov, a Hero of the Soviet Union; it opened in November 2016. One tradition of the N. I. Lobachevsky House Museum is organizing traveling exhibitions of the Chuvash National Museum. These represent different cultural perspectives: a historic merchant's house, a museum with a dated opening event, and an exhibition tradition connected with another museum.

Choosing the Right Focus

When looking for a holiday rental in Kozlovsky District, these themes can provide a starting point: the waterscape, with the Anish as a geographical feature; the protected areas, which differ in size; or the historic cultural sites. The nature reserves can be distinguished by area, location and conservation history; the cultural connections range from the building date of 1914 to the opening of the Butyakov Museum in November 2016.

Kozlovsky District also includes the subordinate destination of Kozlovka.
