Bryansk tells its story through striking landmarks: the monument marking the city’s 1,000th anniversary stands on Pokrovskaya Hill, while the Potemkinskaya Staircase leads down to the Desna from the waterfront, with 145 steps. Museums and a park museum add themes of photography, crafts and regional stories. This gives you a choice of subjects for your trip, from monument history and exhibitions to the river.

Memorial Sites and City History

The monument marking Bryansk’s 1,000th anniversary opened in 1985. Its composition combines the sculpture group “Peresvet and Bayan” with a towering stele depicting the figure of Motherland. The location also tells a story about the city: old Bryansk grew up on Pokrovskaya Hill, and the city centre was located here until the end of the 18th century. The monument and the historic site are thus part of a shared story that extends beyond the figures depicted.

The monument to Yuri Gagarin on Gagarin Boulevard offers another historical landmark. The boulevard is directly associated with the world’s first cosmonaut’s visit to Bryansk. The Holy Trinity Cathedral, the main cathedral of the Bryansk Metropolis, adds a religious landmark to the city’s memorial sites.

Photography, Crafts and Park History

At the “MIF” Museum of Photography History, an exhibition hall hosts changing exhibitions of painting, graphic art and photography. A lecture hall is intended for cultural and educational projects. The programme also includes the “Cyanotype for All” workshop on the cyanotype photographic printing process, which dates back to 1842. Workshop availability may vary; please check directly with the museum before your visit to find out whether it is taking place.

The A. K. Tolstoy Park Museum Complex offers another perspective on the region’s culture. The park was named after the writer Alexey Konstantinovich Tolstoy in 1967, on the 150th anniversary of his birth, and was granted official park museum status in 1974. The collection includes wooden sculptures. At the entrance, the composition “Hymn of Labour” depicts a blacksmith, a baker, and glass and wood craftsmen as symbols of the traditional crafts of the Bryansk region. Tours titled “Tales of the Bryansk Park” explore legends about the sculptures, their creation and the region’s culture. Check tour availability before visiting.

Waterfront and Staircase to the Desna

The comprehensive redevelopment of the waterfront was officially completed in 2018. Since then, it has been considered one of Bryansk’s most comfortable public spaces. Its main visual landmark is the Potemkinskaya Staircase: it leads down to the Desna and has 145 steps. Its nickname comes from its resemblance to the famous staircase in Odesa. The waterfront thus centres on both a distinctive structure and a link to the city’s history.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Bryansk, it is worth deciding first what you want to focus on during your trip: would you like to spend more time exploring museums and park history, or make the waterfront and its staircase the main focus?

More Places to Explore in Bryansk Oblast

The wider destination of Bryansk Oblast also offers its own cultural and natural history. The Khatsun Memorial Complex commemorates the victims of the Nazi occupation regime in the Bryansk region and the Russian villages destroyed during the Great Patriotic War. Ovstug was the family estate of the Tyutchevs and the birthplace of Fyodor Ivanovich Tyutchev. The exhibition at the Dyatkovo Crystal Museum spans more than two hundred years: it includes works by Soviet glassmakers, crystal made from coloured and colourless glass, and vases and decorative objects from the 19th and 20th centuries. There are also artistic light fixtures, decorative glass ensembles and mementos created for well-known figures; the works on display also include rare glassworking techniques.

Bryansky Les Nature Reserve lies in Bryansk Oblast between the Desna and Nerussa rivers and is the region’s only nature reserve. Visitors can experience the wilderness through environmental education, routes and wildlife watching. The area is also one of the centres for breeding and reintroducing bison, which historically lived in this region. Together, the regional attractions span remembrance and literature, glass art and nature conservation.
