The “Smolensk” Festival and Local Memory
In Tsvetnoye, the “Smolensk” festival, held in honour of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God, is marked by a distinctive nighttime custom. For three days, villagers light resin-coated sticks wrapped in fishing nets at night and throw them into the air. The order is determined by age: adults go first, and children take their turn last. According to the recollections of older villagers, the tradition symbolised the joy of finishing the tarring of wooden boats before the fishing season. The nets were also part of the preparations: they were placed in a cauldron for boiling and then taken out to dry. Alongside the festival itself, local tradition thus preserves specific steps involved in preparing boats and fishing gear.
The Church and a Walking Excursion
On 21 September 2019, Metropolitan Nikon of Astrakhan and Kamyzyak solemnly consecrated the Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God; afterwards, he celebrated a Divine Liturgy there. This specific date provides a clear reference point in the church’s history and makes the sequence of consecration and service tangible.
A walking excursion designed to run year-round takes you through Tsvetnoye and its surroundings. Stops include Victory Park, the obelisk to participants in the Great Patriotic War, and the Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God. Allow 30 minutes each for time in Victory Park and a visit to the obelisk. The church visit is also scheduled for half an hour and includes information about its history. The same amount of time is therefore allotted to all three visits; for planning purposes, the main difference between the stops is their subject matter.
A visit to the Tsvetnoye Museum is arranged by agreement with the head of the school museum at Tsvetnovskaya School. If you plan to visit the museum, arrange your visit with the head in advance.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Tsvetnoye, use the kind of trip you want as your guide: local traditions, church history, or several named stops on foot. The suggested timings let you compare the planned visits; the museum requires prior arrangements.
Other Perspectives in Astrakhan Oblast
In Astrakhan Oblast, the archaeological site of Sarai-Batu in Selitrennoye offers a different historical perspective. It is the largest capital-city monument of the Mongol nomads who, after the collapse of the Mongol Empire under Genghis Khan, settled in the sparsely populated steppes of the lower Volga region from the late 13th to the 14th century. Alongside local traditions in Tsvetnoye, this offers a regional history topic on a much broader historical scale.
The natural region can also be described through specific figures and landscape features. The Astrakhan Nature Reserve covers 67,920 hectares and consists of three widely separated sections: Damchiksky in the west, Trekhizbinsky in the centre, and Obzhorovsky in the east. All are in Astrakhan Oblast. Also in the oblast, the summit of Mount Bolshoye Bogdo—the highest point of the Caspian Lowland at 149.6 metres—offers a panorama of Lake Baskunchak and the Sharbulak area. The extensive protected-area sections and the distinctive viewpoint offer a different landscape focus from the cultural stops in Tsvetnoye.
